  1. Right I have this **** hole of a computer that I am trying to fix.

Basically all it needs is a few updates, spyware removed etc. which can all be got easily from the internet.

So I have this pc hooked up to mine via firewire. Network connection created, residential gateway working. I can ping through dos so I know that I am connected.

I click on Internet explorer and I get the following error: -

    Forbidden

    You were denied access because:

Access denied by access control list.

I have looked high and low and I cannot find a solution as to why this is happening. The only way I can see round it is to format the hard drive but that seems a little bit drastic.

If anyone can get me on the internet I will give you a tenner.

This isn't my idea ... but found on another website by someone with the same problem:

Go to Internet Options and the connections tab, then LAN Settings, and ensure that none of these boxes is checked (Automatcally detect settings, Use automatic configuration script, Use a proxy server).
That solved the guy's problem. Hope it solves yours.

Well, if you're having trouble deciding who to donate the tenner to, you could donate it to the charity that helps out the disabled son of one of my favorite authors, Ian Rankin:
