  1. I was going to order some Ritek G05's from Supermediastore.com. I think that I've changed my mind and am going to get the Taiyo Yudens. How are these guys for service and shipping charges (in the U.S.)? I can't find them listed.

    Thanks,

  3. I agree with budz. I get better service and lower shipping costs to the midwest with Rima.
Still a few bugs in the system...

Yep. Taiyo Yuden is the better choice, and Rima is an excellent source

  5. Thanks guys! Rima is actually a hair cheaper than Supermediastore. I'm also looking for some 4x dvd-rw's. How does the Ritek 4x DVD-RW media fair? Are there better options? Currently, I'm using a Plextor PX-712A (1.05 firmware) burner, a Pioneer DVR-220 Standalone burner, and an Apex AD-110W player. I've only had the recorders for a month or so. I'm kinda' "green".

    Thanks,

Word of advice is USE THE ONLY RECOMMENDED BRANDS OF DVD MEDIA that PLEXTOR supports. RITEK is on PLEXTOR's COMPATIBLE list which doesn't mean it will work with your PLEXTOR 712A drive. PLEXTOR drives are known to be picky about their DVD MEDIA. Purchase FUJI brand DVD+RW which are manufactured by RICOH which is on the RECOMMENDED list. You can get them at a retail store like Best Buy since RIMA.COM doesn't sell them.

    http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?id=cat12085&type=page&sc=ALL&qs=fuji+dvd+rw&cp...questid=109227

Apex dvd players will playback mostly anything you throw it at. I'm not sure about the Pioneer dvd recorders but they should only playback DVD-R/RW. Although with your Plextor 712A drive you can enable BITSETTING to DVD+R/RW media which means it will be burned in the DVD-ROM setting then you would be able play it back on your Pioneer dvd recorder.

To enable BITSETTING on your 712A drive you will need to have PLEXTOOLS installed on your computer & use the latest version of NERO BURN. BITSETTING is when DVD+R/RW media is booktyped to burn in the DVD-ROM mode so it will be compatible in a standalone dvd player which normally would only playback DVD-R media. Brands such as PIONEER, PANASONIC & the latest JVC models are only able to playback DVD-R media.

If I am not mistaken with the 712 drive PLEXTOOLS CD was included with your drive. Check the Plextor forum site at cdfreaks.com for more information. I have a Plextor 708A drive with BITSETTING enabled via 1.08 firmware, PLEXTOOLS and the latest version of NERO BURN. If you don't have the PLEXTOOLS CD you could always apply a registry hack then download the latest version of PLEXTOOLS from Plextor and then install it. The key to getting PLEXTOOLS installed on your pc without the CD is to edit the windows registry first then install PLEXTOOLS. CDFREAKS.COM no longer has their threads on how to apply the registry hack. Plextor now offers to purchase the PLEXTOOLS CD from their website. So you could purchase the PLEXTOOLS CD if you aren't comfy doing the registry hack. PM me if you would like to know how to edit the windows registry.

  7. Budz,

Thanks for the help. I think (not sure) I should to stay with the -R/-RW format. My Pioneer standalone only records -R/-RW's. I'd like to use them on both the Plextor and the standalone.

Currently, I've used Ritek G04, Maxell TY01, and Verbatim MCC 4x dvd-r's on the plextor. It has burnt all with no known problems. They have all played on my Pioneer and Apex. As far as dvd-rw's, I've only used Verbatim MCC 2x. They too are compatible on everything. Just looking to move up to 4x on the dvd-rw's. The Riteks looked very reasonably priced.

    Thanks,

    msteis
