  1. Hi,

Once you have printed onto a printable dvd, do you have to spray them with something?

There are quite a few people here that spray their discs to get a "glossier" effect, but there is no "requirement" per se to do so. I print onto the disc, leave it for about a minute to dry then put it in its case.
    If in doubt, Google it.

  3. Doesn't even the sweat from your hands supposed to take of the ink though?

Not that I'm aware of. Let the disc dry for a minute, then pick it up using the little hole in the middle. The sweat from your hands shouldn't come in contact with the disc and so shouldn't be an issue.
    If in doubt, Google it.

  6. I use the Epson R300 and if you don't spray the slightest bit of moisture will cause the ink to run. It just depends on if thats an issue for you.

If you handle disk properly its not a problems.
How often do your disks get near water etc.....
I have printed loads of disks on my Epson 900 and havent had any problems with ink running or smudging due to moisture.... Put too much ink on and its a diffrent story....
    Not bothered by small problems...

  10. Krylon Crystal Clear Gloss. Its good stuff. Just one or two light coats and you are good to go. And its acrylic so it dries in about 15 minutes.

My experience is the disks need a good 12-24 hours to dry properly. After that, you can rub your finger across 'em & they don't smudge. But they come out of the printer very very WET! (ie the slightest "touch" will smudge!!!)...

Not for me. As soon as the disc comes out of the printer it is dry.

    BTW...Using the R200

That's interesting. What printer and what discs ?

It sounds like you're not using matte finish discs, or your printer's using more ink than it should.
    If in doubt, Google it.

I have the R210 (Aussie version of R200 I think??). And I use Princo inkjets (matt surface).

OK, WITHOUT getting into debates about the merits of Princo media , why do you think mine are taking so long to dry?

Maybe 24 hours is an exaggeration, but yeah 12 hours is about right I think, definately overnight. And when I say they came out wet, I mean a "bit" tacky. Leaving 'em overnight, they are dry & smooth.

Don't know. I've got the Canon i865, and I've tried a few Princo Mattes with decent results. Maybe there is an ink-save setting for the R210 somewhere ? One HP printer I had, you could alter the drying time by lowering the amount of ink it used - I'm not talking about Draft/Good/Better/Best type settings either. It was purely to do with increasing drying times without affecting quality. That said, there was a tradeoff between the amount of ink and the quality of print if you set it to the quickest drying time, but it could be lowered substantiantially from its default value while still retain the high quality.
    If in doubt, Google it.

I've tried the Krylon Clear on 2 DVDs and the discs didn't play properly afterwards ..... pixelation and locking up. The discs worked good before so I know they weren't bad burns. I had even run a short piece of scotch tape across the center hole to make sure the discs held tight to the hard cardboard they were attached to so I'd be less likely to get any overspray under the outer edges. Thinking about it afterwards it may have been that the coating I put on was too heavy and through the disc out of balance, even though I was watching the reflection to make sure it was even. I had not had any problems with the ink running or smearing with my R300 before .... but I just wanted to see if it would improve the "professionalism look". So ... I haven't tried it again. In reality ... the discs look great anyway.

I've printed over 300 DVDs with the Canon i865 on the full setting and they're dry as soon as they come out.

    cheers

Normal, it's because you had underspray. I realllly doubt it has unbalance the disc enough to create pixelation.
Run scan disk and check if you now have red square. If it's the case, then you know you've undersprayed!

I've already tossed them but that's a good point. I'll try another later and do the scandisk .......

R200 here, my disks are normally dry when they come out as far as I can tell, I don't rub my fingers on them on purpose either though. Should be same printer and inks without the fancy stand alone stuff of the r300.
I am still using the Epson inks that came with it.
As far as moisture, I haven't tried actaully dripping water onto a disk, but this is a very humid area and I do have sweaty hands or freshly washed hands still damp at times (normal stuff) and that's not been any type of problem yet.

My disks are Ritek DVD-R printables and TY silver top printable CDs, both are doing very well. Never a problem here so far with smears rub offs or smudges. I don't spray mine yet, I may try a few for the glossier look, but no real need for it.
I have a 13yr old girl and her friends handling the disks besides my wife and myself. Plus I have done camcorder tapes to DVD for others and printed those also, no complaints yet.

Alot may depend on the disks being printed also. These Ritek DVDs and TY Cds also printed well on a lexmark printer I modded into a disk printer back before Epson had the low cost printers. I used the Village Idiots guide for my printer mod.

My disks are the older Riteks, I stocked up awhile back and see now some postings about newer riteks I don't like. Next order I will most likely buy TY DVD printables since the price is not that much higher now.
