Sound with ATI card is noisy.

I have an ATI All In Wonder Radeon 8500DV card & I am copying old Beta tapes to make DVD's. The video portion is fine (MPEG-2, Video: 352x480 NTSC, 3.00 MB, Audio: 48.000 Khz, 16 bit Stereo or Mono). The problem is the sound. I am getting crackling sounds. I've tried all the sound settings, both Mono & Stereo & still get the same results. I thought it might just be causing the sound on my computer but when I made a DVD copy of the recording the crackling sound was still there. Any ideas?

The sound card is to blame. What have you got?

Look at the ATI capture audio record level. I have heard that it can set the value too high. Lower it to about half and see. Mine was in the 800s and I lowered it to 400 less, and it is much better. No more distortion.

Also, if you are using on board cmedia chip set, I have heard that the line-in on those chips lack a certain filter. Try the cd-in, if you can.

The sound card is Creative Labs CT 4780 Sound Blaster Live 16 PCI.

Well, here's a new & interesting development. I decided to try updating the Creative drivers & guess what?. Now I have no sound at all when I record through the ATI card. I have sound for everything else. I can even record sound through the the sound card when I plug a cassette deck into it so I know it will record sound, but when I have the ATI card plugged into the sound card it will not record sound. It will pass sound through it because when I play the TV or play a VHS or Beta tape I can see picture & hear sound & I can record them, but when I play it back I have picture but no sound. Obviously I have checked all connections & all settings that I can find & everything is on in the volume controls. Any ideas?

Well, this may or may not be of some help to others that have said that they also have a noise problem with this ATI card. I have finally solved the problem. It wasn't exactly the solution I wanted but hey, what ever works. I removed the Soundblaster card & went back the the AC97 built in sound that is on the motherboard. What do you know. No more static. And it even sounds really good. Now both audio & video look & sound as good as the orginal tape. Yes, I'm surprised but pleased that something worked. Now I can get down to dubbing all those old Beta tapes, many that have never made it to DVD.
