I've been playing around with this "MMC 7.2" (beta?) thing that surfaced a couple of months ago. I'm still not sure what it is but I found the following:
1. The DVD Player works great. It is version 5.0 which is more advanced than the official DVD Player that ATI has released. I think the official version is 4.1 but I use an an AIW Pro 128 and not a Radeon so I'm not sure.
2. Taxing on system resources seems to be greatly improved. All of my captures are rock solid at 100 Motion Estimation settings. Never a loss of frames. Of course you must have a sufficiently powered system. I only mention this because my ME settings were not as high with 7.1 and loss of frames were the result.
3. Quality of the capture is improved. It could be my imagination but my playback after real time mpeg2 captures are exptemely close to the source. My digital cable captures have been outstanding. The viewers think its DVD.
Just some observations.....

Good question. It's not on the website and I've been checking it for the past couple of months. It seems to be a beta of some sort that popped up back in September. The only difference I see is the DVD v5.0. Everything else seems to be the same but performance is improved. ATI seems to carve their improvements into their DVD releases. Like I said I've been playing with it and no complaints.
It was a 30 meg download. I thought it might be the new Radeon release. Maybe not. -
I need to find MMC 7.2 because when I run 7.1 and use the digital VCR function under Windows XP, it locks up.
-
I have not tried it under XP so it may not solve your problem. Although I'm guessing it might. ATI tends to release its updates through its DVD realeases. Like I said I caught it a couple of months ago and the link is dead now. I run under 98se at the moment. Patience is in order with XP I guess.
I'll try it on an XP box tomorrow. -
i just browsed thru the ATI website and there is NOTHING about MMC7.2. They do have a release of MMC7.1 for XP but weather or not its just the same download I don't know.......

Try this URL:
http://neochouchou.free.fr/ATI%20Multimedia%20Center%207.2/
I found this in a usenet search. I have no idea if this is really 7.2. -
I downloaded and installed it.
It is full MMC with DVD player. Readme file says it is 7.1.
And DVD player doesn't work on my WinXP. -
Here is the message that I found the link in:

I had no prior knowledge of 7.2. I just did a search after reading this thread on vcdhelp.com.

Try this link:
ftp://ftp.nix.ru/drivers/tv/ati/mmc/mmc_7_2_dvd.zip

To anyone concerend,
If you anyone reads Russian, then try this Link
Download their mmc 7.2 dvd 5.0
This just took a couple of minutes of non-lazy searching! -
BAH. Don't use this, it's typical ATI crap.
I tried using it under XP, and, well... it worked, whereas the downloadable "real" 7.1 software from ATI's site does not. The only incompatability I noticed from before was the audio crossbar.
The problems with this MMC? Other than making audio capture work, NO IMPROVEMENTS. Still drops frames (much more easily than does Windows 2000, same program), all the limitations of MMC are there, only worse.
ATI, listening?
Please fix:
-Frame Droppage (either using more speedy drivers, or buffering)
-RAM utilization and buffering (MMC doesn't use any RAM at all while capturing!)
-FULL capability to use other codecs to capture AVI (what good is DivX or Huffy if you can't click
configure" to modify it)?
The only thing MMC does right is it's de-interlacing filters. It spits out near-progressive MPEG-2 video. V-dub doesn't, and can't, but is MUCH faster with no synch lost!

I just downloaded and installed mmc7.2 few days back. Here are few changes I noticed so far over mmc7.1
1. It plays vcd 2.0 now but it still captures non-compliance bit rate of 1.05Mb/sec
2. don't get error message like "atidvcr.dll caused an invalid fault protection" while trying to capture at best quality setting or 640x480.
3. Best quality is changed from 640x480 to 720x480
But I still get dropped frames at higher settings -
eclipsed,
Where did you download 7.2. I am asking because the MMC that I downloaded from the links in previous posts is still 7.1 (that's what Readme.wri file says.
Thanks. -
This albatross
does say 7.1, but it is an early 7.2 BETA version for sure... otherwise XP capturing would not even work at all (badly)!
Only a couple of differences over 7.1, like I said, and of course no preformance enhancements...
Wonder why the REAL update still hasn't appeared on ATI's site.. hmmm.... I wonder.... -
Hi homeepez,
Before I installed this so called MMC 7.2 I had this setup:
WinXP Pro,
ATI AIW 128,
ATI WinXP drivers from ATI web,
ATI MMC 7.1 for Win2k from ATI web site (capture worked)
No DVD player.
When I installed this "MMC 7.2", everything works, BUT DVD player DO NOT WORK.
Regards. -
kabanero,
It's same link posted here before. Though it's says 7.1 when you open or go to "about" but there are some changes. Look at under member "next" at https://www.videohelp.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?topic=61353&forum=5 , it has a list of all newer files.
The russian link is not working anymore and it's the english only version around 10mb and other link at neochouchou.free.fr looks like also has other languages and it's around 30mb but main files are the same. Haven't tried the DVD yet, will try tonight.

Hey folks...
the "Real" MMC 7.2 is up on ATI's site. Seems they listen!
No DVD 5.0, though... weird stuff...
Anyway, get this... I installed it, and sure enough... very few changes for the better. It even says 7.1 when you open it instead of 7.2! (oops)!
I did notice that unlike 7.1, you can in fact try to capture without the DVD software installed also. I say "try" bacause the speed is once again absent. I dropped frames like an SOB. It is definitely slower than previous versions, and that's to be expected from ATI. {Sigh}
Pick it up, only for XP users I would say (I guess slow, frame-dropping captures is better than none at all, in theory)...
