Man convicted of selling cocoa powder to heroin addict

A man has been convicted of fraud after selling a friend cocoa powder and claiming it was heroin to help wean him off the drug.

The judge in Vienna said it was fraud and sentenced the man to four months' prison, suspended for two years.

The addict complained to police but was not prosecuted for buying drugs because the powder he bought was harmless.

He handed over cash for 50 grams of the almost worthless cocoa powder.

After the hearing the addict said: "I was furious, but now I realise he acted with the best intentions and wish I had not gone to the police. He has really helped me see the error of my ways and has lost his good name because of me."

Presiding judge Walter Stockhammer said whatever the man's intentions, by selling the cocoa he had been guilty of fraud.
