  1. not that important people but just wondering if anybody knows a solution to this. My 105 for some reason just stopped reading dvds of all kinds half way through a burning sesstion with nero. It will register cds but not dvds, i thought that the driver only has a single lens that does dvd media and cd, anyway anybody have any ideas or do i toss it in the bin!

Likely something with the servo failed and it can't focus to the DVD depth anymore. Could be the laser if it uses two, or could be the laser is failing and still barely able to read a CD's large pits but not enough output to read or write DVD.

For $40 for a new cheapie it can't be fixed economically. The Microadvantage drive has ok to good reviews, and is 8x on +R too.

If you will ship it to me and I'll send you the $6 or so for shipping. Never hurts to have an extra to take apart for electronics, better than hitting the landfill. If it's something obvious and fixable while disassembling I'll fix and send it back for a spare. Unlikely though with it failing during a burn, laser or servo almost definitely went out, and the few other possibilities are even less likely fixable.

The 105 seems to be problamatic with dust and especially cigarette smoke.
To the best of my knowledge it has two lenses.
I have dissasembled and cleaned the lenses on several 105,s.
A little alcohal on a q-tip and a wipe clean is all it took to restore it to proper working health.
If you are going to chuck this unit anyway, take it apart and give it a clean.
You have nothing to lose but the little time it will take you.

    Best of luck

  6. Is there a FAQ or how-to-guide on cleaning a DVD burner ? In lieu of that how about a DVD cleaning disc ? Would that suffice ?

    Thanks
