I have been doing captures on my system, and have run across something I don't understand.

My capture system consists of the following hardware:

    P4 @3Ghz, 1GB RAM, 200GB HD space
Bt8x8 style capture card (it's actually an Osprey 2000, but I'm not using the onboard hardware encoders)
    Sony SLV-770HF VHS deck
    AVTool AVT8710 TBC
Vidicraft HVE100 Video Enhancer (this has all the same functions of the Vidicraft III)

    ...and software...

    VirtualDub
    Huffyuv 2.1.1
    TMPGEnc
    TMPGEnc DVD Author

Here are two clips which demonstrate the problem:

Now, using the very same VCR on my TV this sequence remains the same eggshell white throughout, but as you can see by the examples the capture shows this odd color fluctuation. It also appears ultimately on the DVD that I created. If I play both the tape and the DVD on my TV the difference is obvious.

I will be trying to bypass parts of the capture chain to see if I can identify the cause, but I was wondering in the meantime if this is an example of the sort of thing that people here already know about.

    More details.

Could be bad VCR, Macrovision, capture software, hardware, monitor, etc.

The error is unacceptable. On that we agree.

Yes, I suspect it will be a step by step process in identifying this, but regarding your info. If I don't see this on my 36" TV - using the same VCR - does that eliminate the bad VCR as a possibility?

And (in theory) shouldn't the AVT8710 be able to strip off the Macrovision?

(TV is a Sony Wega that, even though not ISF calibrated - has been corrected by me using both Avia and Video Essentials).
