AFAIK after reading some posts here and in the usenet "Theater 200" needs video signal corrector, but macrovison in "theater" (without any number) can be removed in a software way. I wonder if this is removable in any software way in the new Theatre 550.

Not quite true. The Rage Theater chip will still exhibit light/dark picture cycling effects of MV even after the software hacks (at least mine does). In addition, my experience has been that once you go to the Catalyst 3 or higher drivers, the software hacks stop working no matter which theater chip you have.

Forget it, it's useless. You need to remove it beore it gets to the card.

  6. Well, I hope this chip does not have the same macrovision problem of the theatre 200 chips... (the one that prevented old videos from being captured)

I guess your going to find out huh? I know for a fact short of using external video equipment that problem could not be fixed.

Now I'm getting confused. The TBC still solves the problem, right?
Don't want to buy something that won't work for me.

Yes it should eliminate any MV on VHS, when I reffered to external video equipment that is what I meant. You may even be able to eliminate it with cheaper enhancers such as the ones from SIMA. I'm no expert but here's my understanding, I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong (please do as I would like to better understand it myself).

MV is just a video error artificially inserted into the video. It doesn't affect playback from VCR to TV because the receiver on a TV isn't sensitive enough to be bothered by it. On the other hand it plays havoc with any ?VCR? or a video capture device that has MV detection enabled. It's just like any other copy protection, a pain in the ass for the average consumer, particularly when it interferes with capturing your home movies...... grrrrrr <trying desperately not to start ranting> To quote another poster "MV is a video terrorist"

What a TBC does is reconstruct the signal removing the error.... To tell you the truth if you have older VHS tapes you wish to copy I would reccomend it just to make them look better because it does more than just remove MV. My captures have been vastly improved, I just did a few hi-8's for my cousin and the final product was better than the original IMO.

There was a thread not too long ago with some images showing exactly what it does. The top part of the screen caps were all skewed to the right and very jagged, like a wave. The TBC corrected it to some degree. It really does a great job.

Thx... I hope that TBC will help me with my false MV problem. And I assume there won't be any out-of-sync problems? I mean I'm worried that if the device does something to the signal, adjusts it, I am afraid that there may be some kind of latency. There won't? Sorry for lame questions. ;=)

Shouldn't be any sync problems caused by the TBC. Actually it may improve it because it will fix frames that might otherwise get dropped.
