  4. Virtualdub or virtualdub_mod.

    If you want avi output (divx/xvid) will filter then encode directly. If you want to encode to mpeg 1 or 2, it will filter then frameserv to the encoder (well, most encoders anyway).

  5. i'm just trying to convert avi files to VOB files. But most of the time the picture is too dark.

    You should use TMPGEnc Plus to adjust the brightness/contrast and convert to DVD MPEG format. Then use IfoEdit's DVD Author=>Author new DVD function to make the VOBs.

    TV video usually look darker on a monitor. Keep that in mind.
