Hello, I am having a problem with a laptop my friend owns. He received it for free, and gave it to me to fix it for him. It runs Windows 98 right now, but everything is in French. All he wants is the language changed and the OS re-installed. (I tried switching languages, but it didnt work)
Now then, I have a Windows 98 SE CD-Rom, but when I ran setupe.exe, it said an error about upgrading? And then I searched the internet for a long time trying to find out how to format the c drive, and reinstall Windows. I have found nothing, so hopefully you guys can help me out here.
Now I read something about a boot disk, but I cant find one, and I tried making one, but I dont think it worked.
All I need is to re-install Windows 98 (in English).
Thanks

I had to make a Windows 98 SE boot Floppy on the weekend for a 200 Mhz computer that had 95 on it, and it couldn't boot from the CD-ROM so I searched for it I think on MSN or Google and site came up that had every different boot floopy image all I did was downloaded the EXE file and it said put in a Blank floopy and it made the image with no troubles then I boot it up with that and picked start PC with CD-ROm suport and then went into the CDROM and WIN98 folder in DOS and ran setup.
Let me know if this helps ! -
Here's the site:
http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm
and another
http://www.allbootdisks.com/98.html -
anothr thing.
Boot with the floopy pick start computer with CD-Rom suport then go into the CD-ROM I think it will be D: or even E: then into the win98.
and this is what I alwas did with 98 format the C: drive from there by typing format C: ENter
then run the setup thats in
D:\win98
or it might be in here
e:\win98 <--- I'm pretty sure it this then you will have no troubles !
let me know if this works I think this is the only time I've been able to help anyone. -

if not, just boot the computer with the CD in the CDROM drive (make sure-if you can-that it boots to the CD drive first) and choose "Start computer with CD-ROM support (or something like that...)
then change to whatever drive it has made (sometimes D: or sometimes Eand CD\WIN98 and "FORMAT C:"
after formatting, just run "SETUP.EXE" from the WIN98 folder...
I have done this many times...unfortunately....

Alright, I will try it this afternoon, and I'll let you know how everything goes.

Well, I tried it out, and thanks to your links I got a working boot disk. Unfortunately when I run the setup, I get an error to "Insert Disc", but I dont understand what disc it needs. I have the floppy still in, and its running setup from the cd. What disc is it talking about?
Well besides that, when in MS-Dos, I type "format c:" and it says "Drive C is compressed... Use DRVSPACE" or something along those lines.
So, what should I do to fix it now?"The statement below is True,

The floopy I'm pretty sure needs to be in the wholr time !
let me know if that was it !! -
sorry didn't see the floopy was still in part
you Ever Use FDISK ?
it's pretty easy to use in DOS type in FDISK and if y=I was you I'd delete all your portitions and make just Primary portion and then format that.
then do what I said before again it should work
Let me know if this helps I check here all the time. -
Alright, I will try it right after I fix MY primary computer. Lol.
"The statement below is True,

Yep. Fdisk first, delete primary dos paritition should do it.
Also, do not use Format c:
as this makes your hd non bootable.
Use: Format c: /s (delete space, I tried to but it makes an emoticon)
This puts the system files on your hd. -
Yeah, I got it, I installed the OS and now it just asks me for a Product key. As soon as I get my primary computer working I'll be able to find out what it is. Being the fact I store all of my Product Keys on my computer "just in case". Besides that, I'm done.
Thanks for everyone's help!!!! I appreciate it!"The statement below is True,
