I had cable internet at one time, but now I have dsl.

I am waiting on fibreoptic internet.

It will have speeds of 5 megabits per second for the same amount of money I am spending now.

  8. Dial Up - 56k

Don't spend as much time online these days...so no biggie.

They've only just started offering cable connections in my area...which I'll consider but don't think I'll get that much use out of.

Dialup at home because of lack of options that do not cost a million dollars.

Average connect between 50 and 53k. (Bless those actual hardware modems)

Go get a 3com/US Robotics OEM modem thats actually a true hardware modem. That and a clean house line helps alot when it comes to dial up.

Like I said I have no real options where I live except ISDN and that would run me about $100 and be limited to a specific number of hours, so its a big no go.

There is a wireless place near me that has a good rep but they ar to far away and keep saying they are gonna put an antenna up in town in "3 to 6 months" and every 3 to 6 months they say the same thing.... I've stopped holding my breath.

  25. Cable. Around 1.2 megabytes (not megabits) a second download
and approx 16 kilobytes (not kilobits) per second upload.

    -edit-

Sorry. This equates to just over 10mbit down / 128 kbit up.
I pay $60 AUS per month, $500 setup/modem fee and
and use around 20 gig on average per month.

Cox cable, presently at 3489/445 kbps.(436KB/sec) Varies by the minute, one of the drawbacks of cable.

I use a dialup at my office, really hard to endure the waiting. I was thinking of setting up a phone link to my house and using the cable connection remotely. Tried this one time before with good results.

Only problems I ran into was temporarily disabling my answering machine. I use netzero at my office, so $9.95US a month, can't really complain about the speed.

Where can I get one of these Hardware Modems that does 56K V92 with V44 compression in a PCI bus?

I haven't found one yet (although I just started looking). I'm still using my ISA Bus modem, but if I build another computer I'll have to replace the modem. Seems to me that modems have gone the way of CD-R's whereby the cheap crap is everywhere but if you want something good it's really hard to find!

And I also have dialup. For $5/month there is no way I'd upgrade to something expensive. I use All2ez.net and recommend it!
