  1. I have just bought a Sony AVD-LS10 DVD player and am having problems with it playing burnt DVD-Rs. I have a Toshiba 5112 DVD (DVD-R only) writer and discs from it will play other DVD players but will not play on the Sony (check disc error message). My father has a Sony DVD +/- writer and and the discs burnt on that will play on the Sony DVD player. We both use Ritek G04 discs (from the same batch) and both use the same version of Nero 6. Does anybody know what could be causing this ? I am thinking of buying a Pioneer 108 writer, does anybody know if discs from this play ok in a Sony player ?

There are many possibilities. Here are a few that come to mind:

    1) The laser lens in your Toshiba writer is dirty. Have you cleaned it recently ($10 cleaner disc found everywhere)?

    2) Marginal media - your dad's writer produced a good enough burn but yours didn't. Maybe the media is just bad enough to do this. Remember that every writer and player has its own preference for media types. Some work well in one writer and make coasters in another. I had the same experience with Ritek G03 media with my old Panny LF-D311 writer - it would not burn them, neither would our Panny DMR-E50 standalone, yet the Pioneer 107D loved them and never made a coaster. Go figure :P

    My advice:

    1) Clean the lens in your Toshiba.

    2) Try different media

And if you decide to buy the Pioneer 108, be assured that it's a superb writer.
