Even after being flashed to the latest 1.20 firmware, my 107D (black) doesn't see the 8X +R media I put to it. I have tried the Kodak 8X (gold) and the Maxell 8X media. I haven't found any 8X -R media to try.
The burner burns nicely anything tossed at it with any software (Nero and Alcohol 120%) at 4X in either + or - R media but nothing at 8X
The previous MSI A8 (pos thing sitting on the floor in pieces) would at least see the media as 8X but was so unreliable that it suffered a screw driver death.
is there something else I can try to make this otherwise superb drive see the 8X media tossed at it?
Thanks in advance.

Odd. My 107 has no trouble. There's that annoying "gear shift" and the buffer dump as it jumps from 5.2X to 7.8x or so with TYG02 media. But no problems. Have you tried reflashing with an older firmware yet?

I went from 1.03 to 1.20 firmware.. no good either way.. it's a solid burner, I t does what I want it.. except the 8X burn =)

Why not run a DVDInfo Pro check on the media ID and post it. Maybe one of the media experts like Lordsmurf can make sense of the problem.
My instincts tell me it's probably media since you've already tried both firmware revisions. -
Bloody beggars..
and it's LABELLED as 8X media!! cheeky.. no wonder it's on sale.. heck even for 4X media it's a dang good price and it works.. but still.. grrrr

Yep. It's 4X media. At least you didn't get too ripped off if it's burning OK at 4X. Still ...awfully dishonest

Be aware that some media burns very poorly at 8X even though it is rated so by the manufacturer. Pioneer is one of a few drive makers that ratchet back the speed to 4X in their firmware. You may very well have 8X media that Pioneer says is not good enough. I know Ritek R03 is another one.
Still a few bugs in the system...
