So you can actually burn VCD on a DVD disc ?? and the DVD Player doesn't have any problem playing it back even those it's VCD burned on a DVD ?

as for everyone being so excited about fitting so much on one disc, hell... i'll be using cd-r for a long long long time.
with all these free-after mail-in rebate offers all the time, i've stockpiled over 1100 cdr's now.
when you think about 1100 cds, that a lot of tax that cost me! =\
svcds it'll be for me.

I have the same Dilemma but I will be sticking with creating VCDs for now. As mentioned elsewhere in this discussion, it may be a little longer than predicted before DVDR really takes off. I will however definitely put my recordings to DVD once that becomes more available.
I have lots of home movies I will be putting to VCD. I could simply dump them on VHS but I feel putting them on VCD will be fun and kinda neat being able to play on my DVD player.
I have a lot of photos I will be putting on VCD too. I think this would be easier for me to do this via VCD than to VHS.

Hi Gang,
Here's my thinking on this whole topic.
I'm relatively new to the whole DV scene, and am in the midst of capturing and converting a library of 600 old, B/W movies. I've learned soooo much in the last coupla months that I think will greatly help me down the line no matter what.
I too am concerned about obsolesence. But I figure the hardest part of the whole process is the capture/digitizing. Once the images you want are digitized (i.e. mpeg 1/mpeg2), then everything from then on is simply lossless digital conversion. This is unlike converting betamax to VHS or any other analog conversion technologies I've dealt with in my lifetime (hell, I've gone from 4 track audio tape and vinyl!). I figure that newer technologies will either tolerate the current technology, building on it, or there will be conversion methods to re-digitize information to a newer format. So once I've taken analog data and put it into an acceptable digital format, I figure it will be usable in some way down the road.
I'm certainly no way an expert, so any technies that see flaws in this thinking I love to hear from!
Good luck

The whole capturing thing is a different matter but the only reason anyone would actually back up a dvd to anyhting is that they enjoy the process or get some kick out of piracy
DVD's now cost about £14 in UK. That is about 3.5 hours working at minimum wage. Only a very fast PC will rip DVD to VCD any quicker and the results are obviously lower quality.
So if you want a perfect backup of your favourite DVD, flip some burgers for one afternoon and then buy the dvd on your way home.
personally I like the idea that hollywood studios only get my money once or not at all, so I'll keep doing divx. I enjoy it. -
TO EVERYONE:
any1 remember when we had to listen to tapes, and then cds came out?
remember when we had to watch vhs and then dvds came out?
remember when we had NO INTERNET!! and NO COMPUTERS????!?!?!
well thats kinda my point..
I don't know how long this will be Intel I say this again but this is what I will say
"I remember when we had no DVD burners and had to make vcds and svcds man those days sucked!!! hours of encoding when now we have direct copy that only takes 2 minutes a dvd cause of this super high speed dvd burner I bought the other day for 100 bucks at best buy.. gosh im glad I don't have to make vcds and svcds ever again"
when I say something like that on this forum thats when making vcd's and svcds will be a waste of time.
the more people work on dvd copy, the faster and better it will get.

These comps cost like 3k so the drive can't be more then like 500 of that cost, They are starting to appear and it won't be long until we see them on the PCs as well.

already available and shipping. I think I saw the price at about $600

Actually. They started shipping as an option on the compaq presario 7000 a week or two before apple strted shipping them, and for the same 3k, you can get a 1.5GHz P4 machine with 150GB hard drive, a nice GForce video card,, 1 GB of RAM, SB LIve audio card and some really nice speakers. That G4 won't touch that

GI Joe is cooler though, The Cobra Commander (http://www.geocities.com/Hollywood/Lot/9746/Joepage/charpics/cobracomm.jpg) or Destro (http://www.geocities.com/Hollywood/Lot/9746/Joepage/charpics/destro.jpg) are my heroes. -
Although we have gotten spoiled by some good standalone decks that play eveything, mark my words.....the recordable DVD-R blanks will probably not play on ANYTHING but your computer.
my 2 cents. -

I would like to get some honest feedback on this subject. I'm starting to wonder if making VCD's and SVCD's is becoming a waste of time. I'm wondering this because in 6 months DVDR recorders and blank DVDR's are going to start becoming affordible. Manufactures are estimating 400 dollars for a burner and 2 - 3 dollars for a blank DVDR by this fall, and much less by next spring. Also Pioneer is releasing a DVDR for your home entertainment system this fall that will replace your VCR so you can duplicate movies that way also (you may need a Sima copyguard eliminator). Soon there will be more than one way to truly copy a DVD, or at least you'll be able to put 2 movies done in high quality SVCD with no cuts on 1 DVDR disk. Who is going to want a movie on 3 seperate disks when you can have 1 or 2 movies on 1 disk and in better quality? I feel like in less than a year I'll be re doing every movie I've done. I like making SVCD's, its a nice hobby, but at the same time you have to be relistic and think about what I've said. It will cost money to re rent these movies and do them over, plus it will cost time. I would really like to no what you guys think of all this..

Waste of time ?..Nah..Ive been making miniDVDs of films for about a year or so..Ive got 30 +..They play on my PC and on my DVD standalone (Afreey) so when DVD-R becomes affordable..The only change it will mean to me is I can have a higher bitrate and have even better quality copies. Of course if the film is short enough (under 4.5 GB) then I can make a direct copy from a DVD ..

Actually, DVD-R, DVD-RW and DVD+RW will play on most existing stand-alone DVD players.
The situation is somewhat analogous to when CD-R media first came out and their compatibility with the then existing CD drives. CD-R didn't play on everything, but on most things.

Since i'm in no hurry to spend gazzilon on a DVD Burner or DVD media, i'll just wait for the FMD drives to come out, and then i'll put everything on one disc, as it's capacity is much more impressive then DVD of any type! and the company just finished registering all the patents, so i'm expecting it by the end of the year

The media ain't the point.
The format is...
For everything before 80's, VCD quality is great. Old shows, cartoons, movies...
For everything from 90's till today, SVCD is the perfect format.
Just think that satellite transmissions in europe, are like svcds, on higher bitrate!
A typical transmission:mpeg2 480X576, PAL, BitRate about 4500kb/s, audio 192/48000... VERY close to svcd...
So, the media just give us storage. More space...
I will use DVD-R, DVD-RW, etc as a storage disk, to simply pass my older media...
Like the old CDs to a mp3 cd!
For things grabbed from vhs why mono sound, why I have to do it on DVD? XVCD yes, svcd maybe, but DVD? Why?
Also: In one year, realtime converting of an mpeg2 file to other format, will be a reality.. In 2 years, 2X converting will be a reality.. All these encoding etc, is a waste of time today, because of the current technology. On the future, it will be a few clicks... A few click that we will be prepared for!
Does anyone remembers how difficult was to convert an audio cd to mp3 once? how that used to take for a single song? And now, you can do it at 10X with one click...
So, the point is the format. Not the media.
Also the knowledge of all that stuff...
@Sefy: FMD drives will be really great! But will be any standalons capable to play FMD disks? If yes, then it would be perfect! If no, I stuck with DVDXX -
The Future will always outlive us, tommorow there will always be something new and better, if we keep saying, i'll hold off for tommorow because tommorow is better, then we won't do anything, because humans will always want better and better, that's why we improve, but look at VCD, how old is this format ? 20 years ?
And you can't say that you won't buy something new cause the old one won't play it. you wouldn't buy DVD cause a CD doesn't play it, and you wouldn't buy a CD cause a tape can't play it.)

I agree with Sefy...there will ALWAYS be something better just over the horizon. If you keep waiting "just a little longer", you'll end up waiting forever.
My main interest (for now) is moving my VHS tape collection over to a digital format, instead of watching the tapes degrade before my eyes. I know I won't get perfect quality, but at least the quality won't get any worse.
Also, messing around with technology is my hobby (okay, maybe I'm just a teensy bit mentally unstable). I'm only just getting started into the world of Digital Video, and every day I'm learning that there's alot that I still don't know.

Well atleast somebody agrees with my radical thoughts
We all love new technology, but we all must consider what are we using it for ? is it just to say to your friends what a wonderful new thing you got and they don't ? or it actually going to be used more then twice ? (like my tape backup, geez what a waste!), before you buy something, make sure you buy it because you need it and you are going to use it atleast enough for it to pay back the money you spend on it!
