DVD-R playback

I'm a newbie and I need help(obviously). The problem I'm having is dvd player incompatibility. I have created dvd-rs less than 4gb that when backed up play in all of four dvd players. I have tried to re-create dvds that are over the 4.7gb media limit by splitting the files. More specifically, I placed the half of the video_ts folder onto one dvd-r and the other half onto a second dvd-r. I have kept all .ifo and .bup an both dvd-rs and I only left out the .99gb vob files on the second dvd-r. The dvd-rs will not play on Sony's Playstation2 or the Sony stand-alone. The dvd-rs play without a problem on two different brand Sam's Club knock-off stand-alone players. I am using Pioneer DVR-A03 and Nero 5.54 demo, MyDVD/DVDit, Prassi PrimoDvd... bundled versions. The only difference in the working dvd-r process and somewhat non-working dvd-r process is that Prassi burned the working dvd-r. Prassi would not burn the split dvd-rs mentioned earlier. I had to use Nero and/or MyDvd. Please help me to troubleshoot this problem.
