i have 8x media that burns at 4.1x approximitely. it flux from 3-4.1. i use roxio dvd copier. So its disc to disc. Do you think something is wrong with the media or is it because im burning from another drive.

When i burn a dvd video folder off the hd, it finishes at about 10-11 minutes. but when i burn off hd i cant see actual burning speed, just the selected max burning speed b/c im either usinng nero or tda

What media brand are you using? I just bought some maxdata that had 8x on the package but with dvd indentifier it states only 4x. I can burn at 8x because i have a pioneer 108 writer that allows me to burn some discs at higher speed. Most 8x discs can burn at 12x on my writer but these can't. Maybe this could be the problem.

it is some oem brand, plus i dont have that dvdinfo thing. so i cant tell. It does detect it as an 8x media. but software i use to burn, lets you see what the rate currently burning at, and it never goes higher than 4.1

I bought the media from ebay. figures. my 4x media goes from 2.7 - 4x

Think thats your problem... Trying to burn on the fly. If both reader and writer are on same cable.....

what does 'on the fly' mean. i see that option but dont know what it does.

No both drives are master on its own cable.

  6. 'on the fly' means u do a direct copy from cd to cd, this only works of course if u have two drives. on the fly doesn't need u to create an image of the cd on the drive, it just "copies" the contents from cd to cd straight away.

  8. 8x doesn't mean it does 8x on your writer.

There must be thousands of topics oon the board about,
'my media won't do the speed it rated for',you could read some of those. there is a dvd media topic, left column too.

There is also misrepresented media being sold. We just had a thread about 4 or 5 days ago on some "8X" media a guy bought. He couldn't burn at more than 4X. I recommended he run DVDInfo Pro on it.

He did, and the media code and burning strategy identified it as 4X media. It was plainly labeled as "8X". So beware

Yep. It's useful for blanks because it serves up the media ID which tells you who really made it. It can also scan your burns for errors. Very powerful tool

Check out Lordsmurf's media site if you haven't already. Lots of good info there on media:

I just picked up a set of TDK 8x blanks and on one PC dvdinfo rates them as max 4x while on another PC, dvdinfo rates them as max 2x and I can't get the system to record any faster than 2x.

TDK 4x blanks have always been reliable - no coasters and always recorded at 4x. But with the 8x I'm starting to get coasters even recording at 2x - I think the global demand is pushing the manufacturing quality down in favour of quantity. (and I can no longer buy 4x TDK disks).
