Optware has announced that it has raised 360 million yen ($3.3 mil) from six of its existing investors. They are CMC Magnetics Corp. of Taiwan, Toagosei, Pulstec Industrial, Fuji Photo Film, Matsushita Electric Industrial, and Marubeni.

In July, Optware successfully recorded video on a reflection hologram optical disc using its patented co-linear hologram recording system. In August, the company also delivered a co-linear hologram optical disc recorder/player to Sony.

Hologram recording is regarded as a future mega-storage technology capable of recording 1TB of data (200 times the capacity of the DVD) on a DVD-equivalent disc and transferring data at 1Gbps (40 times the speed of the DVD).

If something like that comes out it may make copying discs difficult for a while but then again there's always a group of people right around the corner who will crack it.
Pretty cool to imagine how far technology is advancing. The though of something like this 10 years ago sounded really sci-fi and it's actually real now.
I read about this technology in Wired a few months ago. At the time of the article they were talking about using cubes instead of discs. I'll see if I can find a picture.
