  1. Hi,

This is an FAQ/how-to for a PCI card install on my site (link is at the bottom). It's a basic help guide, I've had several people email and ask how to do this install in the last few weeks so I thought I make this instead of emailing each indivual person.

I was hoping you guys/gals might take a look and tell me anything I may have left out. Such as a mispelled word or anything like that?

feel free to say good and bad things, I want this to be as accurate as possible. Don't make fun of my computer either It's an old 450Mhz 128M PC133 with XP Pro on it
    Thanks

Since most peolple don't have a grounding strap and aren't going to run out to purchase one suggest they touch a metal part of the case before touching anything else.

You mean just touch the case??

I personally don't use a grounding strap but that's the "correct" way.

Yes touching any metal part on the case should discharge any static electricity.

You might also want to mention that is not a typical motherboard and a typical one will have 4 to 5 pci slots.

That's what I thought you meant just wanted to clarify.

As for the Old Mobo - I'm working on a hard drive install guide and I'm putting a note on there that it's an older model (it has ISA slots ) and is only for demonstration. I'm going to put it on all the install guides. Maybe a header/disclaimer type thing at the top of each page?? Sound good?

    Thanks

  6. only 1 PCI slot on that thing you might want to show it with more pci slots or tell people that, my last 4 MB's all had 5 PCI slots.

    Looks ok to me.

I agree with the grounding since most people won't purchase a grounding strap.

  9. Thanks for the help everyone. I'm going to replace the photos with this computer I'm using right now. It's an AMD and only 1 year old. The out dated one in the pictures was just sitting in the corner so I thought I could it.

I'll remove the grounding strap too

    Thanks

    Nooooo!

Keep it as a suggestion that a few dollars will
help insure their precious hardware from static.

You can never tell what surface people will
repair their comp on. I had one user attempt
the job on the floor with a nylon carpet

As offline said don't do that, I would state in bold letters to use a grounding strap as failure to do so can result in (insert obligatory disclaimer here). Then say touching the metal can be used as an alternative but is not reccommended. If you don't and they are your customers your leaving yourself open to liability.

You'll notice I said touching the metal part should discharge the static electricity.

  12. The Coal Man is right. Also the metal case may be powder coated or not grounded.
