  1. A few weeks ago(I just got around to asking) I bought a 100 pack of Ridata 8X DVD-R disks and had to get a new DVD burner and was in a hurry so got one at the local staples. It was an IO magic 12X or something like that(I returned it). But anyway everything seemed fine and I burned a disk at 8x it finished and I had nero test the burn to make sure it burned right. Which i always do when im trying a new media and a new burner. But it said everything was alright and ejected the disk when it was done. I went to get the disk I picked it up and it only looked like half the disk was burned to. You know how the color changes to a lighter purple on the parts that are written to. It was almost a full dvd so I was a bit pissed thinking the burn messed up. So i put it back in the drive and it was all there. It burned perfectly. I returned the burner anyway becuase it was for one a bit pricy and 2 this sort of worried me. Anyone else have this issue? Not really an issue because the disk works fine but just odd. Only thing i can think of is that the laser was not strong enough to burn the disk as well as it could do so? So it did not change the color? So the 0s and 1s are still there just not as deep so less bright to the human eye? That really makes no sense but its the best i could come up with? Any ideas?

What you probably saw was the spot at which the burner shifted to a higher burning speed. On some media the line where the speed changes is quite pronounced and looks a lot like the end of the burn. If it's all there and it plays OK, I'd guess it was just that and there was nothing wrong with the burner

I'm moving this to the DVD Writers forum.

  3. Ah thanks. I did not think it was all that bad of a thing. Just confused the hell out of me. But it has already been returned. Oddly enough the guy at staples in his own way pointed out that he was getting pissed at me returning things... if your not happy with the quality of our stuff... so forth. Which is odd this is only the 2nd thing i have ever returned to them. Now if it was walmart he would have had a case for me returning to much stuff.

Due to the fact that most high speed burners use a Z CLV burning strategy you will find that you get multi colored rings on your DVD's from speed shift during burning. This is totally normal. The better the quality of the burner the less pronounced these rings will be also depend son the media.
The real answer lies in completely understanding the question!
