  1. I have always bought all my computer hardware from TigerDirect. I noticed that newegg had better prices on what I am looking for and cheaper shipping. Does anyone have experience shopping there or any other thoughts on where to buy motherboard/cpu.

I buy everything from Newegg, If you check my computer details, it all came from Newegg. I just purchased a new speaker system from them last week and now I am waiting on my new sound card. They have the best prices and fast shipping. I never waited more than 3 days to recieve a shipment.

PS. Great customer service, if something doesn't work or you just want to return something.

New Egg is probably the best online retailer for computer equipment. I've made probably 50 separate purchased through them and never had any problems that weren't immediately fixed. If you are purchasing from New Egg, then you've got nothing to worry about.

My experience with newegg has been excellent.

That being said, there are other excellent online sellers just as no one brick and mortor store can be said to have the best prices all the time

Just bought 400 dvd -r at outpost.com (fry's electronic) for $9/50. CQ brand 1x. shipping was a little high but total invoce price was still a good buy.

I don't have the links, but know there are search sites that go out and find the best price on a specific item (atleast claim to)

Maybe one of the "pro's" would write a "guide" with appropriate comments and links titled "A guide to buying online"

Remove probably and you got my feelings exactly. Even when an order goes wrong (rare) they are very friendly and want to resolve the problem just as much as you do.

They grew to their current massive size by being good, not by just investing tons of cash. Back when I builit my XP 2200+ from scratch almost every part was purchased from them. And unless I'm in a hurry and buy locally everything since then has.

I've actually used them when I could have saved a couple of bucks somewhere else because I like them so much. Also FedEx shipping owns UPS.

I too have done that for the simple reasons of easy ordering, great customer service and fast shipping.

  7. I've always bought from TigerDirect, but did have some problems with there customer service. Last time I had a problem and had to go through multiple supervisors to get it resolved. I even found some of Tiger Directs supervisors to be rude. I am definetely going with NewEgg this time.

Agreed with all said here. Every order I've put into NewEgg has gone smoothly, I think I've only had to call customer service to change my shipping information after forgetting to do it during checkout online. They also ship via FedEx so all the better

I don't exclusively buy from NewEgg but I do whenever possible. I get workstation parts from Monarch, cooling supplies from Sidewinder or FrozenCPU, and occasionally an eBay vendor for SCSI hardware.

NewEgg is the site I'm taken to when I hit the "Shopping" button on my extended keyboard

  11. I am confused by all the asus motherboards at newegg, and not exactly sure which one I should get. I am not interested in overclocking, and want to stay under $150 for the motherboard.

Also when I buy the processor do I need to upgrade the cooling fan? Wouldn't the fan provided be adequate to cool the processor, if not why would they include it.

I have been doing a lot of reading, but every thing I read leads to another question. All the different intel processors and cores. I am getting 3ghz or higher with 800fsb - but there seems to be options there too. Like 3ghz-e or c. Plus sockets. I am assuming I should get the 478 socket?

Since you are not oc'ing, the fan provided with the processor will work fine. I am using the fan that came with my processor and right now my CPU temp is 31C. And for the motherboard $150 will be enough to get a great Asus mb. Mine was about $145 when I purchased it a while back but it is about $100 dollars now. I am not saying to get the one I have but it would not be a bad choice. Especially for the price it is now.

  14. So far that one is top on my list. Do you think I should upgrade my 4x AGP Nvidia Gforce 3 if I don't do any gaming.

As long as you are happy with it. In the end that is all that matters. If it is not important to you to get a new graphics card right now, you can always add one later.

For the newer chips, stock cooling will keep it within safe ranges. Depending on your setup that's going to mean idling in the 50's and going up near or past 60 at full load. Alot of people just aren't satisfied with these temps. Switching to a better heatsink combo is going to lower these temps by around 10 degrees at least. That's my experience with AMD chips anyway.

Stock cooling tends to be small heatsinks so that they will fit on any mobo or case, and the fans seem to favor less noise over airflow. Slap a big copper heatsink on there instead and the temps will plummet.

I have the stock fan and my cpu temp is at 33C, it never idles in the 50's.

The 3 ghz C chip is a NORTHWOOD core. The E series is a PRESCOTT core I believe. PRESCOTT core chips run hotter than NORTHWOOD. I got a 3 ghz C chip using the stock heatsink fan with it. cpu temps are fine.
