    Hi

I have some home movies which do not fit on my DVD. After authoring I have the following.

    Video (1hr 22 mins CBR 7500) @ 4349MB
    Audio (384 kbps AC3) @ 222 MB
    Menus @ 218MB

I am wondering whats wrong here. I have read elsewhere that I should be able to fit about 1hr 20 mins on a DVD. Is my video somehow a little bigger than it should be? I was sure that a previous DVD with menus was about 80 mins just like this one. I'm authoring it with tmpgenc dvd author.

If all of the above looks OK, whats the max bitrate I should get. Any advice appreciated. Are the menus a little big?

thats what is wrong, the bitrate is to high to allow it to fit. Use a bitrate calculator to determine waht bitrate you need to fit any particular length video. The one here will do fine.

BTW, you can fit 6 hours or more on a DVD if the bitrate is low enough.

    Hello,

Yes but you'd probably wouldn't want to go lower than 3000-3500 for good quality. Much lower than that and it would degrade (though svcd is about 2000 so if that is ok for you than you can fit quite a bit).

the short answer is that the limiting factor is actually the size.. 4.3 gigs is the limit. the length of the movie matters sorta.. you can get 2+hours if the bit rate is set low.. but there is more factors.. you just need to get the files combined under 4.3 to fit

  5. You can also use DVDShrink to shrink your files and burn a DVD but I agree with bugster's advice.

Set the bitrate right before you start to encode. Set it slightly lower than the calculated result to allow a little more "fudge" room.
