  1. I ahve a tv card and have recorded a bunch of films. Of course these are in MPEG format and i need to be able to convert them to divx format otherwise i will run out of space very soon. I havve tried to use AutoGK with a guide from this site. It is very simple to use and the video conversion is fine. The audio, however, is constantly coming out of sync. Annoyingly it is not just a few seconds out of sync, it varies throughout the film.

Is this something i am doing wrong with AutoGk or is is somethign else?

Try with another tool and see if you get same sync problems,
    dr.divx
    vidomi
    virtualdub-mpeg2

You might have to "fix" the mpeg before converting, a simple remultiplexing with tmpgenc might help, in tmpgenc under file->mpeg tools->simple multiplex set your mpg as video and audio source and make a new mpg.
