Add subtitles to an avi or wmv

Hello im trying to subtitle some videos, but it dont need to convert them to dvd, i just want to add some subtitles to them and then use the media player or any player to play them.
Could some one tell me what software should i use?, i found a lot of guides which show how to add subtitles to a dvd, but i just need to add the subtitle to the avi due to im not recording those videos, i plan to play them on the same computer.

What should i do with the WMV files?
Virtual Dub doesnt support wmv.

No i have no clue, but i gladly would read any tutorial you can point me to.

I was told that Vob Sub would search for a .vob file with the same name of the video i was playing, but i just cant seem to be able to make it work, any ideas?

Correction. Do you know how to use AviSynth? It can use a function called DirectShowSource to open .wmv files in Virtual Dub.
