I did a search to see if this topic has been discussed before but nothing turned up. Does anyone know if rewritable double layer DVD's exist and, if not, are they planned to be released?

they're having enough trouble with writable DL.
and you are talking about RW DL? -
the industry knows this...which is why DL burners are going for cheap. NEC 2510 for $67 and 3500 for $82. But then again the singles are cheap too (NEC 2500 @ $57).they're having enough trouble with writable DL

ha, there was a free after rebate dvd writer at office max yesterday, but its back to $9 after rebate

I agree, they can barely keep up with straight DL, not to mention RW. -
I wonder if it'll be DL that kills the "+" format.
The DVD Forum is sure quiet about DVD-R DL right now.Want my help? Ask here! (not via PM!)

I hope your take on it isn't overly-optimistic, IndoOriginally Posted by indolikaa
I'd hate to think that the only reason they're lagging so far behind the +R DL is because they got caught with their pants down. If so, they need to hire more competent industrial spies

According a German magazine (chip.de) Mitsubishi is supposed to be working on increasing the reflectivity of DVD+RW to make a compatible DL version. I guess we'll see next year whether they succeed or not.Originally Posted by jccruit

I'm not joking, and I don't think he is either.
+R/RW has always lagged behind, and DL is not doing them any favors right now.
DL dye-based recordables are effectively useless at the moment, and the drives are glorified 8x/16x drives.Want my help? Ask here! (not via PM!)

Lordsmurf, just agree that you have a biased opinion towards "+" format and no matter how good and innovative their product is you will simply dismiss it as inferior for no other reason, but because you only support DVD Forum's format.Originally Posted by lordsmurf
I use and support both "-" and "+" formats, but DVD+R9 is a great achievement. Please remember that it was DVD Forum who earlier said that there will never be a DVD9 recordable disc. DVD+RW Alliance proved them wrong. So simply admit that their DVD+R9 is a success even though it's still expensive. And if you don't, then I guess there's no point in trusting your tests and reviews because, as in "-" vs "+" case, they would probably be extremely biased.
P.S.: I was not trying to flame, but to simply look in the eyes of truth. -
Why do you all say that DL just doesn't work and won't work ?
Any technical clear advice on that or just speculation ?
Isn't it weird that only one or two companies make DL discs ?
Why Tayo-Yuden hasn't made these discs yet ?
Any hope for -DL ??

They have probably not even tried it so it's pure speculation. If you search various forums you'll see that the users that actually have tried it report that the compatibility is very good as long as DVD-ROM book type is used and you don't use some crap Nero version to burn that mess up the layer change. The same is confirmed in professional tests too.Originally Posted by Zetti
Not really. The first DL drives showed up in late May and media always lags behind the hardware. In case of DL discs there is also a quite big technology and financial barrier that basically makes it impossible for small manufacturers to start making DL media. Besides Mitsubishi and Ritek also CMC/Philips, Ricoh and maybe Prodisc should soon have their own DL media available though.Isn't it weird that only one or two companies make DL discs ?
You have to ask TY. On the other hand they don't make any RW media either so maybe they just want to concentrate on making SL DVD±R and CD-R.Why Tayo-Yuden hasn't made these discs yet ?
I'd guess that the first drives will show up by the year's end or early next year if the specs is approved by the DVD forum next month. It will of course take longer for the media to show up.Any hope for -DL ?? -
I haven't seen one of those in monthsOriginally Posted by jaxxboss
