  2. Media Player Classic is what you want. You can leave Quicktime and Realplayer installed or remover them and use Quicktime Alternative and Realplayer Alternative to just get the codecs. Then set the default player for those file types to MPC instead of the normal players for them.

BSPlayer works real well for just about any VIDEO format.

I use MusicMatch for MP3 audio or CD audio playback.

There are a number of different skins for media player classic that you may find more appealing. Personally I like its default slimmed down look, and all of the necessary options are certainly easy to find and use. As far as overall functionality of a media player is concerned, I don't think you're gonna do any better then MPC.

Another good choice is Zoom Player. A lot of options, very configurable. Will play most files with the proper codecs installed. The pro version is nice, in that it remembers your setup and you can have several configurations.

Or VLC media player which will play most Real, Xvid or other types of files. Kind of a basic player, but it comes with most necessary codecs to play most anything.

Neither of these players have all the extra crap RealPlayer or WMP10 bring with them. I still use a older version of Power DVD for DVD playing becuse I don't really like the latest Power DVD interface. Seems it only wants to play DVDs and is harder to use with just MPEGs.
