The reason I ask is because I am thinking of getting a new monitor. I currently have a 18in lcd screen. I just want something bigger to play games on and to watch movies from the computer sometimes.

This is the one I would like to get. Now I know it would be Ok to watch movies on but would it not be a good choice for a gaming monitor.

  2. Shit, would Flight Simulator look sweet on THAT!

I have no idea, but with a resolution of only 1280 x 768, that seems somewhat limited for a 30" screen.

1280x768? That seems a little low.

On a related note, who here has Doom 3? Man that game is friggin sweet. The only problem is that it runs pretty slow on my machine. Not too slow, though.

The monitor you posted seems to be really cheep, even for NewEgg's standardds. Some of my friends are serious gamers, I'm just broke. :P Google it, you will find a few good reads.

Just a few, there are plenty more. It takes a really nice LCD to compare to CRTs. 8)

You guys are all right. I guess I just needed to hear it from some others besides myself before I believed that it would not make a good gaming monitor no matter how bad I wanted it to. I'll probably end up getting this one.

    Thanks guys.

Honestly, if I were you I would go for a 22" CRT. Obviously you've got the cash, and the quality would be noticable. Good luck. 8)

I've heard something to that effect too. One of my mates is buying a 21" CRT monitor for the same price as a 15" LCD, specifically for gaming. We reckon he's loopy but anyway ...
    If in doubt, Google it.

Just because they cost the same doesn't make them equal. A CRT will always be better than an LCD. Maybe $10,000 LCDs are different but I'd rather just buy a CRT for a tenth of that that will still be superior. For gaming, CRTs are still better. If space is really that important, thats the only reason ro choose LCD over CRT.

    Fair enough.

I personally think LCDs are better for my circumstances. I don't do much PC gaming - I leave that to the XBOX. In my case, space is a big concern as is vanity with a new house and all The only real downside is dead pixels - most warranties need a minimum of 6 dead pixels before they're classed as faulty. It really pisses me off in the middle of a dark scene on a DVD to have 3 fluoro green pixels standing out like dog's nuts, but it's bearable as opposed to basically having the monitor resting on my lap
    If in doubt, Google it.

I've got a 20" LCD at work and a 17" LCD on my desktop at home. The home one does very well with gaming. I'll never go back to big, clunky power-hungry CRTs again ....ever

It's on a sweet 3 GHz Xeon HP xw6000 Workstation I have there. Funny, the idea to upgrade from my 600 P3 was the computer support guy's idea. He said "let me handle it" and ordered me that fire-breather:
    36GB 15Krpm U320 SCSI, 2GB RAM, 20" HP LCD, DVD & CD drives, Nvidia Quadro 4 980 XGL graphics

I couldn't run Mentor on the old machine very well and he saw me struggling with waiting and waiting Nice guy, that John.

  18. I would personally stay away from the Viewsonic 20 inch LCD for gaming. CRTs are still better for gaming. I had the 22inch Viewsonic CRT which was amazing for gaming but was really big. After FedEx broke it in shipment, I had to get a new one.

I chose a Planar 20 inch LCD because it got the best rating besides the Dell 20 inch for Gaming in Maximum PC. They tested about 4 of the best LCD monitors and Planar scored a 9. No shadowing shown or anything. I can tell you it does a good job but it just doesnt seem as great as my 22inch CRT.

If you are stuck on going with the LCD get the Planar. It really is a great monitor. Its just as cheap as that Viewsonic LCD you were thinking about. Here is the link.

I thought response time was important when choosing a gaming monitor. The reason I say that is because the Planar monitor in your link has a 25 ms response time and the ViewSonic has a 16 ms response time. Here is a review (provided by IAIHMB )for that ViewSonic 20.1 LCD screen.

  20. Ya you could be right there SlickRick. The only reason I chose the Planar is because of the excellent reviews it had. I wanted a good LCD and it compared with the Dell 20 inch LCD which is supposedly the best one on the market. Now I am just taking Maximum PCs word for it which isnt probably the smartest thing but it did get a better rating and it was more versatile than the Viewsonic.

I have no complaints yet with my LCD and it has held up to everything it said it would be. Running on highest resolution looks wonderful.

You can see the reviews at maximumpc.com. Its under the reviews section.

LCDs response times just don't cut it when it comes to gaming, unless you plan to spend $3,000+. Here is a really good read, it should be right up your alley. It gives you the good and the bad when it comes to LCD monitors and gaming.

You can get a LCD or Plasma screen that works just as well as a CRT, you're just going to pay $$ through the wazoo for it. I stick with CRT's though I do ahave a 20"LCD for one of my towers. I don't do any gaming with that computer though. The screen is not the best for use with it. I stick with CRT for gaming with the newer action & 1st person shooter games. A bit bulky, but can't beat the quality for the price. You will probably want to get it locally rather than online. Shipping for large CRT monitors usually brings the cost back up to what you'd pay at the store or higher.

Thanks for all the info guys. I know that CRT monitors are the best for gaming but I just don't see myself going back to a CRT after having a LCD. So I guess I will just buy the best LCD that I can afford and hope it works well for what I am going to be using it for.

what is it you want the LCD screen for? Other than a space saver, there's not much benefit from a cheap LCD screen. If you're going to spend the money and want a large flat screen, you might as well go for a projector. There was an earlier thread that discussed them. But again, you're going to pay quite a bit for your resolution.

Feh, no need for hard drive space anymore?

Number crunchers Cap, get an Opteron system. Those things are silly fast for that kind of work.
