I saw this today on the Rima site. Yesterday I posted about how Rima had dropped the price down to .69c each in 100 cake.
"*4X media is being discontinued by Taiyo Yuden - to be replaced by 8X. We have a limited supply remaining of this item code."

This is probably true for all makers. They should all be 100% 8X production now with 12-16X testing. I wonder how they can make money with so little runtime between the new speeds?
-
I wonder how much better the 4x is? Like with CDR, the best writes were at slower speeds with slower media.

Thanks for the heads up. Just ordered 100 tonight...hope they got some left.
And got the answer to my Q last night on how low will they go...69cents... -
I wonder why you would go for the 69 cent 4x TY when the 8X is only 75 cents and is already rated at 12X in my NEC? Only a few months ago we were very happy with Ritek G04s at 84 cents.
Still a few bugs in the system... -
Perhaps he has a 4x max drive. In that instance it'd be worth it to save the $.06/disc IMO.

Do you really think we will reach 50, 60X with video and the quality be as good as if writing at 1 or 2X? Seems like video would have a limit. But, I could be totally wrong...anyway I'm limited to 4X for now.

no more 4x TYs! Damn they sould have waited until Dec/Jan when I upgrade my burner.
The 4x TYs are dead, long live the 8x TYs. -
Hey guys,
My disc supply is running low, so I'm just about to stock up again. After Ritek went down in quality a few months back, I started using TY 4x's, with no problems.
I have a 8x burner (LG 4082b), but have been using the 4x discs because they were a lot cheaper and the faster burn time, while nice, wasn't absolutely necessary. Now that the 4x/8x are about the same price, I figure I may as well go for the 8x discs.
However, every now and then, I will run across a post or thread that seems to indicate that 8x discs may be less reliable or more prone to problems. Is there much to this? Are there more problems with 8x discs - such as failed burns/playback problems/etc.?
I'm trying to decide whether to go ahead and move on to 8x discs or stock up on 4x discs while they are still around.
By the way, are the Ty discs only available with the shiny silver top surface? - this is the only thing I don't like about them - the surface seems to smudge very easily and for some reason attracts dust/lint like a magnet.
Thanks for any feedback,
Roy -
In my personal tests, I haven't seen anything that would suggest 8x discs from the better OD manufacturers (TY, Maxell, MCC) are of lesser quality than their 4x media. As for TY discs, you can get white-topped inkjet printables, but they will cost more than the silver thermal-printables.

This only applies to DVD-R. They are out of stock on the DVD+R..

Oh well, I guess I'm stocked up for awhile.
And save an additional .02 per disc...
