  1. Does anyone else get small bad spots in the recordings made on this machine? Like blocks in the picture, or the picture pixelating for a second or two? Even the audio once in awhile. I used to see this on the Panasonic once in awhile, but it seems like 60-75% or so of the recordings I make on this thing have at least one bad spot in them. I'm using the same discs I used in the Panasonic and it rarely had any problems.

  2. On the fly hardware MPEG2 encoding has one downfall... since it is not 2-pass VBR, when there are scene changes the first frame or two of the new scene can sometimes look crappy as the encoder adjusts itself to a whole new background, etc. Perhaps that is what you are seeing. No problems with audio, though. That is constant bitrate sampling.

I think this might be one advantage to a DVD recorder with a HDD. You could record everything at max bitrate to the HDD, then let it compress and re-encode the video to DVD - that's a quasi 2-Pass method, I suppose.

  3. It doesn't happen at scene changes. It looks sort of like bad spots in the discs. Before using the Prodiscs I tried a few different brands of discs that used to have bad spots in them, or maybe the Panasonic just didn't like them, it looks like the problems I had with the other brands of discs before switching to Prodisc. Once I switched to the Prodiscs the Panasonic quit having the problems except once in awhile. Maybe the Prodiscs just aren't as good as the previous ones were.

  4. Generic brands like Prodisc and Ritek can vary in quality from batch to batch. I've personally given up on them and only use high quality media like Taiyo Yuden now. Haven't had any problems since.

  5. Maybe I need to switch too, those bad spots are annoying. The TYs are the same price the Prodiscs were a few months ago.

Ditto here, I also hate to use generic brands. Just recently I tried to use a cheaper brand so I purchased a fifty pack of Riteks and all of them worked well. Thinking that this would be common place I decided to purchase 100 more. and that's when the problem started again.

I purchased them from Mertiline and they came in 2 bundles of 50. One bundle of 50 worked great while the other pack doesn't work well at all, I tried 10 burns and got 10 coasters.

I went back on my oath I made to never buy a generic brand and got caught again. Stick with the name brands. 8)

  7. Not to get too far off the subject but I have been saying this for years.
I use to see post where people were constantly looking for cheap media and backing up their projects. I wonder how long they would last. I'll never know since I've stuck with TY's myself.

  8. Riteks are considered cheap? I thought the G05s were supposed to be good discs. I had good luck with the Prodiscs in the Panasonic, but not in the JVC.

Some would differ and say that Riteks are a good brand, I say no. I like TDK, Maxell and Sony. Neither one of these brands have ever given me multiple coasters.

I must admit that TDKs have opted to outsource their manufacturing to CMC and that was the only time I had problems with them. I still have problems with Memorex disks.

  10. If you're in the States, there are Fuji 50-pack spindles that are Taiyo Yuden manufactured. Look for the ones that say 8x and "Made in Japan." I've been getting nothing but quality burns from these. Best Buy had them on sale a couple of weeks ago for $24.95 and I grabbed several spindles.

I have a JVC HD-160GB DVD Recorder and I got those blothes with only the DVD-RW discs if I try to fill them up. However with the also cheap DVD-R discs I have no problem even if they are filled up to the brim. I don't understand why I can only put a couple of hours on the disc when I am supposed to be able to put up to 6 hours by selecting "JUST" which adjusts the bitrate accordingly?
