That happened to me too on one of my PCs a few months ago. Windows Media Player was completely unresponsive. I then remembered I forgot to upgrade to Windows Media Player 9. If you haven't done that yet, I suggest doing it now as it will probably fix that problem. Plus WMP9 kicks 8's ass...

    You could try another player.

    I recommend bsplayer.

As far as the update interfering, I have never heard of it and I play avi's all the time.

Do you have the latest codecs?

Xvid is up to version 1.2
    Divx is 5.2

Or you could get a codec pack. Some do not recommend this, but it works fine for me.

You can get them from anwhere like www.doom9.org,www.afterdawn.com just to name a few.

    www.divx.com
    www.xvid.org

I use the kazaalite codec pack

With each codec update, bugs are corrected and improvements are made to the encoding engine. You might also run across something that uses the latest codecs and you would need the latest to decode it.

    Try using powerDVD or windvd.

    The m2v is mpeg2.

Or you could try using videolan.

No. That is not a problem but they really are just basic dvd players.

For more features you need to try powerDVD or windvd.

You don't need to use them all the time, just use them for your mpeg2 stuff if you want more features.

Like I said realplayer and windows media player just provide basic no frills dvd playing.

    There are lots of players.

I use bsplayer for my normal stuff and powerdvd for my dvd's.
