Is there a simple solution to making a KDVD without using a crapload of different applications? Please don't direct me to www.kvcd.org I've looked around and all their guides use a ton of different applications to do what I'd like to do. It'd be nice to use one or two applications and get 6hrs of video on a DVD to backup some of my TV Show's on.

    Thanks

I asked a question and all I would like is a solution if there is one.

Your on the site where theres a number of people who hate kwang's encoding solutions. So you will need to ignore a bit of dummy spit.

    KDVD is a solution.

To answer your question, you need to state your requirements. IE 4.5 hours of high action DVD on a single layer disk with no menus (or whatever) and only 1 language and no subtitles.

KDVD is nothing more than using a finite portion of the DVD spec (and even then, some of his matrices are questionable as to whether they are truly compliant with the intended MPEG specs for DVD).

This kind of compression is nothing special, and anybody with decent knowledge can accomplish this with existing software (just pay attention to DVB for a model, and keep it in DVD spec). It's really not that hard.

    It's either a DVD, or it isn't.

The "K" usage requires progressive source (because 23.976 is often used), so in my mind, that's totally useless unless you want to copy commercial DVD releases or deinterlace your source (which is a bad idea).

You're correct in that you won't find much love for the format on this site, as most people here have no use for such things. Most sources are interlaced, and then those that backup commercial discs tend to use transcoders.

Save yourself grief, and run with a 4-hour DVD, which is about CVD in spec. Half-D1 interlaced MPEG-2 full-fps and you cannot go wrong.

  6. Why would you expect to find better info here than on the site where the methods were created???

There are a lot of useful methods here which remain in spec. As for progressive source, most premium cable or satellite feeds can be run through an IVTC procedure to arrive at a progressive source to encode. This single procedure will yield the most boost in quality with space savings of just about anything you can do.

Also check out MPEG-1 on DVD, which is NOT the same as VCD on DVD.
