  1. The WinAVI people (person? one person I think?) are very patient and faithful to try to see me thru the problems I'm having. I can no longer convert files to AVI as I get a message

"Information failing! No usable video stream. Please make sure that Media Player can play both the video and audio for the file." Well, it can.

So they had me recreate the problem and send them a log file, and sent me back these instructions:

    >>>From your log file, we learnt that it must be caused by your hardware DVD decoder on your computer. Please just shut down it (right-click the mouse on the desktop-->Attribute --> setting -->Advanced, and then you will enter into another control panel. After that, please find the hardware DVD decoder and close it).
Also, please install a Powerdvd! <<<

When I right-click my mouse on the desktop, it doesn't suddenly bring up something OTHER than the desktop attributes (fancy that). Anybody got any ideas what she means here? Or any solutions of their own?

    Thanks,
    Tam

What they are refferring to is the decoder on your Video card. desktop>properties>settings>advanced will bring up the control panel for your video card.

  3. So when I follow those directions (thanks, by the way), the options (tabs) are:
S3Display, S3GammaPlus, S3InfoPlus, S3Overlay; general, adapter, monitor, troubleshoot, and color management.

In looking into each one of these tabs, I don't see any reference to a DVD encoder. All of the drivers (except for Direct X) looked to relate only to the video card itself.

Is there something I'm missing? I really LIKE WinAVI but this newest glitch is really frustrating me.

That's the trouble I don't know, if in fact that is the trouble it doesn't seem like a very good solutiuon to me as it doesn't fix the root of the problem.

What have you changed since the problem started? Have you updated XP to SP2? If this problem suddenly appeared after doing the update I would suggest reinstalling WinAVI. SP2 is "breaking" a lot of apps, reinstalling them seems to fix some of them. Even if youm haven't updated reinstalling winavi might solve it. Have you updated your drivers recently? If it worked before it should work now without disabling anything.

  5. I think the "break" happened when I tried to reinstall something in connection with my PowerVCR II. But I'm not sure what changed. I am still running XP. Maybe I will unstall everything and start over from scratch, WinAVI last.

I suspect your right. I just did a little looking around Windows Media player doesn't support mpeg-2 files unless you have mpeg2 or DVD decoder installed. In other words you installed something that broke your current decoder or when you reinstalled Powr VCR (which supports DVD and mpeg2) you didn't install the decoder along with it. I'd reinstall Power VCR. then WinAVI if it still doesn't work.

Suggest you remove all codecs and then download a package such as Kazaalite mega pack, that did it for me

I would reccomend you do NOT install a codec pack. Some install codecs that conflict with each other, others include spyware. Others have different problems.

If you must install codecs, only install the ones you need, on a case by case basis. Do not install codecs you don't want/need by using a codec pack.

    Thats my advice anyway.

  10. So here is what I did, based on everything y'all said...
Uninstalled PowerVCR and PowerDVD, and WinAVI, in that order. Reinstalled all, in that order. System said I was running low on memory and shut down repeatedly.

    Upgraded to SP2. Rebooted.

ALL IS WELL, WinAVI is doing its thing right this moment, no glitches so far.

    Thanks a million!!!!
