I'm trying to make a backup by spliting the DVD into 2. My problem is the second DVD wont show the subtitles? (english translation). The first will show them fine. What do I need to do? Will puting menus on both DVD's help? Oh, I have tried to use CLONEDVD2 and DVD Shrink but no subtitles show. Thats why I decided to split it.

    Thanks for any help

  2. Hi bengsj.

    - Use your software or set-top player to identify what subpicture stream is played by default.
    - in DVD Shrink Reauthor mode, right-click on the title (after you've dragged it to the "DVD Structure" pane on the left).
    - use the "Set Default Streams..>>Subpicture" menu and select the subpicture stream you previously identified.

I was able to back up my Hidalgo using DVD Shrink 3.2. I did only the movie using re-author mode.

    First, get into Re-author mode.
Then drag the "main movie" from the DVD Browser section into the Re-authored DVD section.
Then choose the "compression settings" tab.
Next, choose your audio streams, and then check off the English sub-picture(s) - I chose only the smaller English sub-picture because all I wanted was when they weren't speaking English in the movie.
Now over in the Re-authored DVD section, right-click on "title 1" and select "set default streams" to get a pop-up menu.
Under sub-picture, pick "display the following sub-picture stream", and then choose which you want to show.
Now continue with your backup as usual.

I hope this works - it worked for me.

Y'know, the movie fits in "movie only" mode, with almost no compression. I didn't bother splitting it.

Yeah, the extra are pretty meh anyway, and the little animation between menus is a waste of time IMO.

Yeah, I broke my own "keep the menus" rule for this film.

And frankly, after about 2 minutes, the "old Indian tells us why Hidalgo was the bestest horsey EVAR" extras all got super-old, too.

  7. To make a backup copy of Hildago with Clonedvd2 with English subtitles coming on and off properly (as I recall), you need to include all the English subtitle selections when transcoding, and then switch to the 2nd English subtitle selection when playing.

Yes, agreed, but it helps to have the translation of the Arabic later in the movie. Some interesting things going on that you will completely miss without the forced subtitles....
