I have just reformatted and reinstalled XP. I have also reinstalled all the software (encoders, codecs, etc) that I can think of. Windows Media Player is not playing DVDs, the error it gives is:

"Windows Media Player player cannot play DVDs because a compatible DVD decoder is not installed on your computer"

What am I missing? (my brain?)

    Thanks

Windows does not ship with a DVD decoder, so save Microsoft (and therefore the consumer) having to pay license costs for CSS, macrovision etc.

You need to install either a commercial DVD player, such as PowerDVD, or try this codec https://www.videohelp.com/tools?tool=323#comments

Forget about Microsoft Media player. Try Media Player Classic. The link from Video Help is:

It worked like a charm for me on Windows Server 2003.
