  1. A newby to MP4 via Nero Recode, my conversions work fine in Nero Showtime. Trying them in QuickTime 6.3, I get a error code about an unrecognized format, then QT 6.3 goes right ahead and plays it just fine!

QT 6.5 gives the same error, but does NOT play it well, if at all. In fact, it's seems to be harder to find MP4 support comments in 6.5, but MPEG-4 is touted on 6.3's "splash screen" at startup as the "next big thing."

Does 6.5 suggest a pull away from MP4 by Apple? Their website gives no such indication.

(I'm still struggling that Nero has a *proprietary* MP4 format?)

  2. Followup to my previous:

Although QT 6.5 balks at MP4 via Nero Recode, Windows Media Player 9 does NOT.

MP9 will pop up an alert that "the file extension is not understood, but click "yes" if you want MP9 to try it anyway."

    Result: Plays like a charm

MP9 provides a check box to eliminate the popup alert the next time it encounters an MP4.

Although I'm loathe to admit it, "when in doubt, try Media Player."

Too soon old . . . too late smart!

  3. FURTHER update:

Windows Media Player 9 has a bug that disables the "seek" slider, which means you cannot skip forward or backward when playing MP4.

Microsoft has a fix: Search their website on "836544" for a link to the download.
