I keep my Pioneer at it's 2x ripping speed because I find it can read thru defective disks that my 16x Benq simply can't read thru. I was backing up a Farscape disk. These are not region or copy protected so I normally compress with CloneDVD to delete the extras. I got an error half thru,so I ripped to my HD and tried again, same error. Then I tried Nero Recode and DVD2ONE and again te same error. So I decided to rip in my Pioneer and see if the errors would be corrected and they were, the disk then compressed without the error. The Pioneer ripped the disk at a normal 12x speed, not 2x. So I tried a couple more un-encrypted disk and again normal rip speed. It appears the 2x lock is on encrypted disks only.
