I have an old VHS Tape recording that I would like to put on DVD but the quality is pitiful. Now I am no stranger to converting VHS to DVD and etc., thanks to this site and the community for providing excellent 'How To' guides. I have read and tried all the filter formulas for VirtualDub but see no difference comparing the input and output. I have also read that several of you use hardware with DNR/TBC for VHS conversion. If I could get some advice on the best method to improve this tape or if I should just forget it I would appreciate it greatly. For an example of the tape I captured some frames and then encoded the avi to mpeg2 resulting in a 13MB file. I can provide the link if requested and not a violation. Thanks.

More than likely it will be identical to the original or a little worse.
If you want it to look better, you could always try to find it on dvd somewhere.
As the old saying goes..."garbage in,garbage out." -
There are vcrs that can read degraded tapes better than others. Sony for example have a model with "reality regenerator" which can pick up the information from degrading tapes fairly well.

I have gone down this road.
If you have only one tape, give it to the pros, even though it may cost 100's, worth the pain and aguish of trying it yourself, to say nothing of the cost of any equipment, for a one off job?PAL/NTSC problem solver.

You can restore the input somehow. Also you can clean some noise the tape has or the broadcast had during the recording.
That is improvement for some people...
What is not possible to improve, is the detail of the picture. The detail, not the sharpness...La Linea by Osvaldo Cavandoli

Hey Dude, If you are going to convert more Old Tapes than it would be wise to buy the equipment. But for just one tape let a professional takea stab at it.

I just posted some "before and after" poor quality VHS test frames corrected with a hardware video processor and captured with a DVD recorder. Have a look...
