Hi guys, I am an avid computer geek who is looking for any back issues of CPU Magazine. I attend a special high school called DATA (Design and Technology Academy) where we study all aspects of computer technology. Being a student I do not have the ability to purchase back issues. I am looking for a donation of your old CPU magazines or any other technology related magazines. These will be used throughout the school for reference and projects. I can pay for shipping if it’s modest. Please contact me if you would like to help out.
    Thank you,
    Steve stevef22@gmail.com

What do you mean by "special school"? Do you ride the short bus?

Try your local library. They may have old magazines they are willing to part with.

  5. You could check with the small computer stores and repair
shops in your area. The small 'mom and pop' shops.

They probably subscribe to various computer mags.

    Steve,

Have you dried the direct approach? Visit their website:

    http://www.computerpoweruser.com

On the left column under "Forums/Chatrooms," click on "General Discussion." While you need to be an active subscriber to post in the computing chatrooms, they do allow you access to the General Discussion forum for a limited period of time ... registered as a "guest." Go there and leave a post asking for subscribers to donate their old copies to you. And, you could also send email to:

    customer.service@computerpoweruser.com

to see if they might be willing to part with a few old issues based on your "academic" request.

Well, there's always the "email customer service" route. I'd bet they have a whole bunch of old issues lying around in a warehouse and would love nothing better than using them as a "tax write-off" donation to an educational institution.

    Good point.

Unfortunately most big companies have their dumpsters
only a few feet from their buildings. I've seen a lot of things
get tossed that could be sent to a vocational school instead.

It's nice to see that Steve wants to learn.

I also noticed that he didn't mis-spell any words.
    That really hurts!

Yeah (sigh). They're published out of Nebraska, too. Now, if they were Californian, they'd have to recycle (grin).

P.S. A friend works for the post office and says that a lot of magazines have given them permission to distribute undeliverable magazines to places like nursing homes, hospitals, and prisons. And one of the most popular magazines in prison is apparently (snicker) OUTSIDE Magazine.

So far I have had a rep from Computer Shopper help me out. Her name is Liz, she said she was sending a few mags. I’m not sure what few means but I can only hope it’s allot. Thanks for the good hints. I already tried Barnes N Noble. I talked to an employee and when mags don’t sell they rip the cover off and box them up. Then they send them to the garbage. The whole process is all done very suspiciously too, the Barnes N Noble employee said he could even get in touch with the boxes stock full of expired mags. Only the store manager has these privileges. What a waste. I will try hanging around my grandmothers retirement home and see what I can find. I hope they read CPU. I thought people would have allot more CPU mags sitting around collecting dust.
    Thanks,
    Steve

Not at all. This is standard protocol. They return the covers to the manufacturer for unsold ones, and the magazine remains are NOT LEGALLY SUPPOSED TO BE SOLD, so they are destroyed. Some places "give them out" but that's not really legal either. This has been the standard for probably 75 years now.

Approach a few bookstores or magazine marts with some sort of school approved request form or letter head. When I was in high school our library was torched and we went on a book drive to help replace the damaged books and such. For old magazines try hitting a few places that have waiting rooms like doctors, dentist or mechanic shops
IS IT SUPPOSED TO SMOKE LIKE THAT?

    Good idea.
Last time I was at my Grandma's retirement home, they had tons of PC World, PC Gamer, and Linux mags kickin' around. They were even shootin' the shit about the new 64bit CPU's when I walked in.
