Hey guys, I have an A/V sync issue that I just cant seem to figure out. I have captured DVD MPEG2 video files from old VHS tapes using the Pinnacle Moviebox and they play fine. If I demux the files, clean up the audio, and mux them, they are out of sync? This even happens if I just demux and mux right after without changing the audio at all.
I have searched the forums over and over trying to find a solution but to no avail. I have tried frameserving from Vdub Mod to TMPGEnc while selecing to have the video and audio sync under frame rate, I have tried Hypercubes new Time stretcher without a fix. The audio and video are the same length so I ruled out using a time warp in goldwave. I have played with the initial offset of the audio which doesnt keep everything in sync.
Is there anything I am missing here, anything else I can try? Any suggestions/comments are greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance guys!

Hi, i used to have the same problems. So now can do 2 things .
First instead of demuxing and muxing i edit the audio file while it is still attached to the Video using Sony sound Forge 7.0. I Make the volume louder or softer etc. Then just save it as "Mainconcepts Mpeg 2".
Just make sure the Attach Video box is marked.
Another way i got around the problem was after capturing the Vhs file onto my hard drive, i will demux the Video from the Audio. Then i transfer the audio file into sound forge 7, edit, EQ...do whatever to the Audio and then l save it as a 48,000 pcm-wave file.
I don't mux it back to the Video file...cos like you have seen this can cause sync' problems.
So you'll need 2 different files.
1. The original Video & Audio File (Attached together)
2. The new Audio only file that you de-muxed from the video, edited and saved as 48,000 wave file.
So basically you first load the original Video and Audio file into Tmpg Enc Author and then you load the Audio only file in that you have edited.
What this does is even though you have already loaded a Video and Audio file into the Authoring program...after you load the second edited audio only track in, this track now becomes the new Audio track and it replaces the one that you originally loaded into Tmpg Enc Author with the Video file. Now if your thinking why don't i just load in a separate Video file without the Audio and then load in another Audio track...this doesn't seem to work...i can't explain why.
So this is how i do it now and there are no sync problems. The whole new mux is done while the DVD Authoring program finalizes the DVD.
And it stays in Sync' -
VEBouto: Thank you so much! That worked like a charm. My audio is now perfectly in sync and I have regained my sanity!
One more question for you or anyone though. I have taken my audio into Sound Forge, performed a hiss cut and normalized to 80% as per a guide I found while searching the forum. On my PC the audio has a very nice volume but when played on any one of my standalone players, it is much to soft. Is there anything that I can do to turn the volume up anymore? Thanks a lot guys! -
If you plan on capturing from VHS regularly, I suggest a decent Timebase Corrector (TBC). Saves a lot of stomach acid with sync issues, even though this one seems to have been resolved.
There's always tape stretch and mechanical slop that'll make capturing from VHS a nightmare without a TBC, not to mention macrovision -
Hey glad i could help, but i was wondering about some of the stuff i said in my last post and while i was playing around with TMPG Enc Author i discovered that if i loaded the Video file in (without the Audio), then loaded my re-edited Audio track in , it now works for some reason. I don't have an explanation to why it works now and not before.
So really you can first load a Video File with Audio in then your new Audio track or just the Video file with your new audio Track.
Doesn't really make a difference.
Except if your gonna Re-Edit your original Audio track in Sound Forge, then you have to separate it from the Video file anyway.
The good thing about using this technique is that the Multiplexing of the Video and new Audio track is done during the actual creation of the Video Output process. Keeping everything in Sync'.
As for your volume being too soft, is the DVD volume on your stand alone player up high?
After you have edited the Volume and Hiss on your audio track and you say it sounds good and loud on your PC, then this is how it should sound on your DVD player. When you listen to the track on your PC in Sound Forge, is the LED volume bars going in to the red now and then?
You should have a DVD-RW or +RW disc so you can test out different volume levels and do DVD burns without wasting good disc's.
Just make some different Vidz, adjusting the Volume and remembering the settings you used.
