Had one of the young blokes at work come up to me the other with a Spiderman 2 DVD, he got it cheap down the pub. He reckoned it was not playing right in his DVD.
I had a quick look at the thing, it was one of the poorest "nock offs" I had ever seen. But what really intrigued me was the quality of the cover and the DVD itself.
No bullshit even after closely examining the cover and the DVD label etc etc, I would have sworn they were original, absolutely perfect quality. Yet the contained DVD was outta focus, wobbly, and a big black shadow gets up and exited stage left after about 30 seconds of the movie. Obviously this version came from someone in the theatre with a handi cam or similar.
I told him to chuck it and get himself a legal version. But after looking at the quality of the cover and labeling, I can understand why he got sucked in to paying $20 down the pub for it! I just cant believe anyone would go to that amount of effort for such a bad copy of the film.![]()

The screener copies are usually very poor. Not surprising. What's with the nice art though? Maybe someone's a Photoshop pro but not so good with video?

I saw one of these. Had a great menu, nice cover art. Dark, bleeding video. Yuck. At first I thought it was an early release, maybe a screener. Nope, junk.

Seller is trying to make some quick cash...so they'll go all out on the cover to catch attention and make it an attractive offer.
The networks run stories like this on the news and various shows, and will show people buying these from some guy on a busy street corner.
The box looks like an original, but often the discs are of the cruddiest quality you can imagine or are completely blank.
They say, the person who bought it can't complain, 'cause what they're doing is just as illegal as the person selling the DVD...so you get what you deserve :P
It's one of the MPAA's tactics to get people to stop buying pirated movies.
I could understand it better if it was something that might not ever get released on DVD, like a foreign or obscure/indie movie, documentary or music video, but something mainstream is generally a 6 - 7 month waiting period from theater release to official DVD release
Why not just wait until it's released?
You'd probably get the original for less money anyway. -
That's just downright horrible! That guy's not going to get repeat business that way.
I make sure to have an excellent case and excellent production on the video. I make sure to use a 3 CCD cam with a mini tripod to keep it steady. All of this is housed inside a mannequin that I wheel in as a handicapped person. On the rare occasion that someone passes in front, I simply cut out those frames and use a vdub smoothing filter so you can't notice the cut.
I swear, production values are really going down. And $20? Everyone know that the most to charge is $15 (usually $10).
For those of you new to the business (and me): :P
