    I've been making VCDs and XVCDs but have a new DVD Player and am considering making SVCDs to take advantage of the higher quality. I've seen either 480 X 480 or 480 X 576 stated as the resolutions for SVCD but would like to know which is better for my TV. I have a regular 27 Inch TV and want the video to take up the whole screen without any black areas around which SVCD appears to show on my PC. Thanks.

    480 X 480 is NTSC, 480 X 576 is PAL. See What is SVCD (top left).

    I think that black areas are unavoidable if you wish to keep the aspect ratio at what it should be.

    480x480 is for NTSC and 480x576 is for PAL. You need to use the one that is supported by your tv and dvd player. If you live in the United States, then you are an NTSC user.

    480x576 is pal if you live in europe and 480x480 is ntsc for north america and japan.
