Anybody familiar with DVD player hacking is probably familiar with nerd-out, and one of it's respected members, ArizoneSteve.

Well, Steve has finally figured out what EXACTLY causes these recorders to malfunctions (exploding PSUs), and is sharing the information, and not just that... he's now offering services to repair them (very reasonable!).

So anybody out there with Apex paperweights... check this out:
    http://www.drx9000repair.netfirms.com/

The APEX was an excellent recorder, true VBR with an LSI chip. It is only surpassed in quality by the JVC units. Though I am very happy with my LiteOn and JVC units, sometimes I miss that Apex (would almost prefer it over the LiteOn).

This page (site) also discusses some other common problems of the Apex units, and the fixes.

This should bring the smiles back to a few people's faces. No longer must the word "Apex" be followed by a few more four-letter words.

If you end up contacting him for anything, tell him LORDSMURF or DIGITALFAQ sent you!

The 9200 supposedly does not use LSI chips.
I cannot find one near here.
Walmart is rumored to not carry it mainly due to high returns on the 9000s, even the refurbed 9000s.
