I have windows 98se and the dell computer it came on didn't give me a real windows disc just the classic dell restore disc. And drivers on the disc the computer asks for occasionally, like when I install the Sidewinder Pro USB, it asked for my Win 98 disc so I couldnt install it,
But here is what I thought would be a great solution,
I went and compiled a directory listing of the Win98 cdrom
if I use something like Morpheus to download all the needed CAB files using my cable modem, and burned them to a CDR would the disc work as a real disc that I could even do a fresh install from.
I already have the product id number from my computer so that wont be a problem.
And I feel that since I did pay for this machine and the OS is a part of the package that I should have a REAL win disc not this POS restore that doesn't have the drivers.
What do you guys think will it work.

I would just find a friend with a copy of the proper Win98SE disc and burn a copy, it wouldnt be illegal as it is a backup copy of software that you already own.

Why not just use Morpheus to download XP Pro or 2000? Instead of that crappy DOS based pile of shit that is 98. The 9x code is now serverly outdated and is greatly outclassed by the new M$ OS's.

I dont know anybody that has a real disc, all of my friend have only a restore disc. I didnt think you could download 2000,
The only reason that I havent tried that is that I heard that 2000 has little multimedia compatibility.
I know that my ATI TV wonder VE has drivers NOW for 2000 but will all other software work, like TMPG and virtual dub. -
...did you check your C:\WINDOWS\OPTIONS directory? Most of the time, the pre-installed OS was ran from the harddrive, and this is usually the directory.
my 2cents. -

I had this problem, burn your drivers etc as standby,I then deleted the whole lot, useing start up floppy and running a win98se disc adding from backup afterwards, works ok + being independant for future changes.

I have checked my options/canbs directory and their are zero driver cab files, I even used my find feature and only found non related cabs, like to install MSN,what I wanted to know is, is there any sort of way that the 98 disc has a feature on it that it would detect the fact the the disc was a burned disc.

Nope, actually, I had a faulty disc that shipped with my computer...all went well until I needed to refresh my install. THe only way I could do it was to copy the WIN98 folder to my harddrive and then burn it to a CD...then I ran the install from DOS. As long as you have the serial number (I assume you do and that you aren't trying to steal Win98 lock stock and barrel...because...let's face it...who would want to) it should work fine. Microsoft wanted to charge me $30 to replace a disc that THEY MADE faulty...******* Bill Gates!

This is going to sound really weird, do you guys know of a place where I can get the win2000 cdrom directory listing, because thats how I am compiling a win98se disc, I went to microsoft and found their win98se cdrom directory listing but they dont seem to have one for 2000 does anybody know how I could find out what files and where they are location on the win2K discs.

I dont have the exact link because it leads to 14 pages that contain all of them but I can tell you where to find them, go to Microsoft.com and type "Windows 98 se cdrom directory listing into the search box and the results should lead you right to the pages.
