  1. Cheers

I'm sort of new here, in that i havent really written anything, i mainly hang around in a swedish "general" forum that doesnt necessarily concern video or computers.

I was just wondering how this forum relates/compares/etc to doom9 ? Are you competitors or is that forum something that came off of this site?

    peace

DOOM9 SUX!!! STAY AWAY FROM THERE!

Nah. Seriously though, both places provide a wealth of information that pretty much covers all bases. What you can't find here, you may find there, and vice-versa.

  4. On the subject of Doom9... Is the reason their forum is down, technical or political. The reason I ask is that the day the forum went down, they had a good rant about the "RIAA, MPAA and Co"...

    Just wondering...

I'm sure its technical. If doom9's forums went down everytime he ranted about the MPAA or RIAA then the forum would only have about 3 posts in it.

This site and doom9 are different. I think its safe to say that doom9's forum is more technical and more advanced, while this site is perhaps broader. We still talk about good ole VCDs and SVCDs here and I don't see much about that stuff anymore over at doom. Both forums are great though, and I frequent both. There's no competition that's for sure. And as far as I know, there's no connection either. Both sites started up independantly.

From the Doom9 frontpage: "Also, you might have noticed and please do not send any emails about it: the forum is currently down due to database problems. It is being looked into, but the guy that usually takes care of this is on holidays, so it could take a while." 08/05/04

Doom9 is a good source for encoder info, CCE, TMPGEnc and various DV codecs, among other video related subjects. Hope they are back up soon.

There is no connection from what I know between our forum here and doom9's one. Most members of this forum are registered on doom9 and vice versa.

The English doom 9 forum turned over the years to be the place for those worldwide who like to talk and do things from a technical point of view. Most of their members are program developers, students, even proffecionals.
Our forum here on the other hand, covers all things about video, from the hobbiest point of view. We talk much less technical and much more practical. That's why we have members from 12 to 65 years old (and probably older...), from all over the world.
Also, we have a great "Off Topic" community, which turned to be the last years among the more inteligent communities in the internet.

We also have a "newbie" section, something that most forums about video don't have any more (or they don't have much activity on this).
But I wouldn't say that we are a newbie forum. One third of the newbies come here and learn about this hobby here first, stays here for long (if not ever). The rest two thirds, move elsewhere (some of them turn too technical so the obviously lead to doom9 or other places and some others simply loose their interest about all this we talking here)

You must be reading a different off topic forum than me!

Red Wingers, vinyl sheep and Midget clown Porn do not make for an intelligent community in my book

Doom9 is about theory. They like to talk about "why" more than how. And then I see too many analytical tests (bitrate analyzing, kprobing, etc).

Afterdawn is about "backups" and audio and games.

VideoHelp is about application and is pretty heavy on the VHS -> DVD conversion, PVR, etc.
