I have just started using Mozilla firefox instead of Internet Explorer, and so far it seems ok. Has anyone found any downsides to this browser that I may not be aware of? I have read that it's safer to use, as it is less likely to be targeted by hackers. Also, are there others around that are better?
    Thanks.

I love Firefox, a lot safer than IE that is for sure. There are cool extensions, like adblocker, best of all, free.

  3. The only downside is that ActiveX controls and VBScript doesn't work... though I wouldn't call that a downside...

It means that a variety of nasties can't infect your computer (vs IE) while at the same time, very few websites actually use either of these technologies.

    No complaints here.

It does have bugs, but unlike a leading browser, they are reviewed and actioned very fast.

I have come across a few web pages that don't format correctly. Minor inconvience for the ease at which this browser works.

There is only one browser better, and thats Safari. So unless your on a Mac Firefox is the way to go.

  10. It's OK, but it's tabbed browsing is kind of pathetic compared to Opera's. And it seems to take an inordinate amount of RAM. Anythings better than IE, though.

  12. I use mozilla 1.7.1 as well. I am a little worried about firefox until it's final...I don't like beta testing with a browser that I have to sometimes type in personal info...

I like it. It's like Safari lite, or something. I've encountered a few webpages that don't load correctly, but I use firefox more than I do, ie. My bank's webpage has some java that won't load correctly, but it's only for ad space, so I don't really mind.

Mozilla makes two different browsers, Firefox X.XX and Mozilla X.XX. You are using Firefox.

Edit: Ah damnit, looks like there is a new Firefox release, 0.9.3, I wonder what things will be like when the reach 1.0.

Love Mozilla, especially with the Prefbar installed. You can kill flash, clear the cache and history list, toggle JavaScript, and more right from the toolbar.

    http://prefbar.mozdev.org/

The security features is what appeals to me most. IE can't hold a candle to it.
    Yesterday I downloaded the world,
But it took up too much space so I had to purge it.

I think Foxfire is a 'lite' version of Mozilla. No email, editor, etc.

  25. Firefox is based on the Mozilla code but is designed to be eventually better than the browser in the Mozilla suite.

I'm a 98lite user (Win98/SE stripped of everything like I/E, O/E, AddressBook, MDAC, ActiveX and all the other troublesome MS-BS). I was an avid registered Opera user until I found Firefox. Opera could not use Ebay's picture services (picture upload service) whereas Firefox could. I was either forced to use a personal webspace to host pictures or use I/E to upload the pictures. I prefer only to have one browser on my system and Firefox met all my needs. Fairly small, seems to work on every site I frequent, regular security updates, free and standalone. Firefox seems to be fairly fast and doesn't seem to be subject to crashing as Opera and I/E were. It works well with Foxmail and Proxomitron web filter.
