    I need a good dvd writer but don't want to spend very much. How is this one? Perhaps some other suggestions. Should I go retail or OEM?

    No! It is definitely NOT good.
    This is a rebadged BTC burner.
    BTC 1008IM and 1108IM have gotten horrible reviews.
    Write quality at 8X is terrible on most media.

    My suggestion would be to buy an NEC2510A.
    www.newegg.com has excellent prices on these drives.
