I'm well known for planning stuff out that either never happens, or happens and everything gets so screwed up I might as well not have tried. This time however is different.

At worked I used for my 2nd computer a G4 Cube, it was a nice machine 450mhz, DVD-Rom, 192ram. Iused the DVD quite a bit, as I work overnights and like to watch movie. (no sups. to catch me at night)

However the other day a new box was offered to me. A Powermac G4 466mhz with 128 ram and a CD-Rom Drive... eewwwwwwwwwww. Why on earth would I want that?

Then the plan formed in my head and I said I'd take it. That was a week ago. I"ve been planning since then, and tonight I got the system.

Step one: Hardware sneak. Had to get some stuff in that wasn't company offical.

Step two: Ram upgrade, pop inanother 256mb. Ah 386mb should work for now.

Step three: Superdrive, put my old orignal borderline busted (everything works expect the DVD burner part will not only burn highest quality media)

Step four: Put old Radeon VE into my work PC. Flash it with tools found online. Pop it into the Mac. This was the part that had me worried, stuff like this never works for me. I was 99% sure I'd end up with a dead card.

    Step five: Profit!!

Well low and behold it worked and I now thanks to RAM and Quartz extreme have the 2nd fastest mac in the call center.

  3. Sweet upgrade... Powermac G4 466mhz is equivalent to an Intel what? (I'm not familiar with Mac processors)

I could quote a number out of my ass, but it would be just that. All CPUs are getting pretty hard to compare these days.

466mhz is kinda old, but with the edition of Quartz Extreme is faster then say the P3 700 that sits beside me. Then again this specific PIII 700 is slower then many 450s.

In short... a fastish P3 would be my guess. But without the quartz extreme, about the same speed as a snail.

Apple decided that if you have a video card with more then 32mb of ram, meaning a decent card with 3d support then why should a whole part of your hardware only be used when your gaming. Therefore quartz extreme shifts part of the load of the 2d graphics engine in OSX to the video card for assistance. When your graphics system is PDF based this helps a whole lot.

The problem is mac video cards tend to cost alot, I didn't want to invest 40+ dollars into a cheap video card just for a work machine that my job is to cheap to ever upgrade itself, therefore I took a chance on flashing it to a mac compatible card.

    I'm just happy it worked.

  7. That is, the OS GUI is hardware accelerated by your video card.

Much of how "fast" people perceive a computer to be depends a lot on the apparent responsiveness of the GUI.

Its more then just an apperance of speed. With the GUI somewhat offloaded the CPU can do more. Things that launch in 5 seconds now launch in 2 or 3.

System prefs launches in 1 "bounce" instead of 5. Safari in 2 instead of I can't remember but it was a bunch.

That would suggest that OSX is somewhat "heavy" and "bloated" in its use of GUI effects then...

i see the first thing that causes you to worry is that it's a MAC. Sorry to hear that. but I'm glad to hear that it's now fast as heck and works without being scrapped for screws and brackets. J/K - Good job.
