I just got some Verbatim Digital Movie 4X -R from Best Buy. Made in Taiwan, media id MCC01RG20.
I use Ulead DVD MF to author/create an iso, DVDecrypter to burn the iso on an Iomega (relabeled nec1300) burner with the original firmware. I've burned lots of RICOH, TY, and CMC. Never had a problem burning at 4X.
The first MCC only burned at 2X. It played fine and I did a read test with dvdinfo, which was fine. Anyone else had this problem?
(I'll try burning with ulead on the next disc to see what happens)

A firmware update might solve your problem. The above website specializes in NEC firmware. I have 1300 and a similar problem with Princo 4x burning at 2x. Flashing to the latest firmware solved my problem. Might solve yours. -
Thanks for the tip. I looked at herrie's site a while back. Never upgraded firmware since I never had a problem burning at 4X.
I just tried burning another disc using ulead dvd mf to burn video_ts/audio_ts folders I made with DVDshrink. It burned at 4X, so I won't bother to do the firmware upgrade.
DVDecrypter must not like these MCCs.
