(or: Why I am waiting until at least MoneyMas now before I burn any more)

The burn process went quite well. At 2.4X, the 7.23GB image I burned took a little under forty minutes. Sure, I would have liked a higher speed, but you can't have everything, I guess. The disc was completed without any buffer underruns or complaints, so I was happy.

Then I tried to play the disc in my set-top player. After a slow, three-minute grind, it spat the disc out and said the disc had an error. Okay, I didn't expect players to just roll over and play the disc. So then I tried them on two other DVD-ROM drives. Same thing happened there. PowerDVD would get the drive running for a minute or three, and then report that there was no disc.

Well, I'm not happy, and I did contact LG asking if player firmware would be updated to fix the inability to play DVD+R DL, but apart from that, it will only play on the GSA-4120B that I burned it on. So we're going to sit back a few months and see if it gets any better.

Well, I'm sure it was news to some.

For those who have any curiosity, the disc I burned to DVD+R DL now isn't even recognised by the drive I burned it with. I know it has the data on there, but it seems no drive can see it. I might as well have taken that $14.95 and flushed it down the can, in other words.

  4. I would not get a DVD+R DL drive that can't bitset

DVD+R DL is a brand new booktype, no wonder most players get confused when such disc is inserted.

Get another brand or try Kennyshin's fw hack (if you don't mind voiding the warranty)

PS: and use the latest Nero for burning DL, DVD Decrypter has a problem regarding the layer break.

Unlike you I had success and it plays on all my players, including an old Toshiba that is even fussy with DVD-R.

    Here is what i did:
    1. Ripped iso with DVD decryptor
    2. Changed bootype to DVD-ROM on the disk(bitsetting)
    3. Burned iso with latest Nero.

I think your problem is the bootype.

I have the Lite-on 451S burner that i flashed to DL. I could not beleive my luck that this old burner could do DL...yoo hoooo.

Only paid $127 Aussie dollars for it.

I would be inclined to give the matter further effort if I could get the drive I burned the disc in to read it, but just to make it clear - the disc will not read in any drive within the house. Programs keep claiming it is empty and yet cannot be erased.

I've searched repeatedly for drives that are capable of bitsetting and can burn DVD+R DL. Given that they are all Lite-On, I'm not in the slightest bit interested. I've tried before to flash Lite-On drives to RPC-1 status, and to call them a pain is putting it nicely. Doing it twice is bad enough, but doing the procedure exactly as specified six times and having it still say it is RPC-2 is enough to prompt me to say I am not buying a drive like this.

I've just basically decided to wait it out and see what happens in the next six months. It isn't like I have such a pressing need to back up 7.9 gigabytes of anything right now, anyway.

  7. You give up this region free thing too easily.

DVD43 and AnyDVD work quite nicely, the first one is free - no need for rpc1 firmwares.

  8. yeah,i would steer clear of DL for a while,at least till they make a drive THAT WILL work reliably of the time, and media that WILL WORK reliably too.
couple that with the standalones ability or inability to play DL,and a decent price, and well, like Nilf, just wat till its all ironed out.
this is still in its infancy, and sort of like flatscreen/TFT monitors, wait till its gets to an effectively acceptable level all round, and ill maybe jump on the DL bandwagon, until then, ive got better things to spend my £$ on.

  9. There is only one thing to iron out for LG.

Make an official firmware that is capable of bitsetting.

    Thats it.

Given how much of a premium Windoze XP already puts on system resources, I am not running more programs just to attain something I should be able to get with a little technical know-how. Nor am I going to spend more money on another drive. My current one isn't broken, so no need to replace it.

I have informed LG of the situation and told them I'm a little less impressed than I was when they upgraded my drive. We'll see if anything comes of that.

Agreed, tompika... official firmware update and another PR win for LG. What more could they want?

Oh yeah, I should have mentioned I used DVDDecrypter, the latest version as far as I know.

  13. -I could be mistaken since dont normaly use DVDDecrypter but I've read a few post saying it has problems with layer breaks.

-Did the DVD play up until the layer break or just nothing played period?

Didn't you just read the whole thread?

DVD Decrypter and the layerbreak - mentioned.

What happened when he tried playing them - mentioned.

Nothing played, period. At first, the drive that originally burned the disc would play it back, but the next day, even that wouldn't do it. Very upsetting.
