I've bought one of these machines 6 months ago and I've got no problems with it.

    Basic care taking activities are:
    1) Burn only DVD+RW 2.4x media (4x is unsupported and may damage this machine, but can be read without problems)
    2) Clean lenses every 2 months
    3) Use it for short periods (2hrs or less)

Now I use the machine basically to record from the TV and see video DVD's. Before I had to convert my old VHS tapes. I have about 20 RW's and each has been recorded about 10 times, no coasters so far.

I'm surprised that some people in this forum claims that the DVDR75 lacks quality. I have Friends that had problems, but they used to burn on RW 4x media, and this could well be the cause of their misfortune...

Please post here your good practices to maintain the machine in good condition, or the reason why you have experienced failures.

I have an old (over 2 years old) Philips DVDR985 that has only shown me an error message once (on July 12th) that did not occur during or after a recording.....the error message occured at power up. I downloaded the latest firmware for it and it has not given me any problems since. I had NEVER updated the firmware prior to that.
I DO NOT play factory pressed/bought DVD's in it....I have a DVD Player for that.
I DO NOT even play the DVD's I have made with the 985 in the 985...the same DVD Player does that as well.
I DO NOT record daily TV shows and such with my 985...at the time I bought it...the 985 cost me almost $800....my $150 VCR records shows that I do not want to keep just fine.
I've mainly used unbranded Ritek(1x thru 4x) DVD+R's in my recorder for it's entire life.
Recently I have been using 4x BenQ RW's since I now mainly use my 985 as a "vehicle" to get DVD material into my computer...then make a proper looking DVD.

  3. i've had the dvdr75 for a few months now and i have zero complaints. quality is great and it hasn't failed me once. i unplug mine when i'm not using it and i usually don't use ot for more than a few hours at a time. i burn on +rw and rip to pc. works great for me. plus it has a firewire connection i can use when i get a dv cam eventually.
